B ut that’s not all they did: the students also pitched in on other projects and worked to clean up the area around the church. Snuffle Smith suggested the bike path project after church m em bers asked her about any projects needing to be completed in the community. Leslie MittsZSpilyay Members of the Oregon City Evangelical Church chose the project at ECE to complete during their spring break mission trip. Because the bike paths were unfinished and som e children didn’t own bike helmets, Smith said, they were unable to allow children to use the bike paths. Because the tribes’ don’t always have the resources o r funding for projects like that, she said, it w as an ideal p ro je c t fo r th e church group to complete. “The program needed either grass o r a bike path,” Smith ex plained. I t’s som ething that she believes the. children will benefit from a lot, Smith added. “It really makes a difference for them to come out and re lease th e ir en erg y o n so m e thing,” Smith said. “It’s just go ing to make a w orld o f differ en ce fo r e v ery o n e h e re at ECE.” T hose with the church also started a project for CPS— bags for boys and girls were purchased and filled with hygiene and cloth ing items to be handed out to Bottle drive fo r g ra d p a rty families with foster children. “T hat’s going to be an ongo ing project for them also,” Smith said. A cco rd in g to P a sto r J o s h Shelton, the youth raised about $1,600 to pay for supplies and the bike helmets. Fundraisers included everything from selling Christm as w reaths to hosting dinners, and they also received donations from people in their church. A ccording to S helton, the youth w anted a chance to get som e w ork done during their spring break. “They have an attitude for serv an t h o o d ,” S helton said. “W arm Springs is a wonderful place fo r th em to com e and work.” Its not the first time O regon City E vangelical C h u rch has com e to W arm Springs. Last year a youth group completed a fencing project in Simnasho, and th e church has m ade regular mission trips to the area. “ O u r chu rch has a strong passion and love for the people over here,” Shelton said.
