Part of the $3,589 donation will be used to purchase a stove for the kitchen at the Boys and Girls Club headquarters, in the Vernon Jackson building, said club director June Smith. Also, part of the money will be used to replace some much-needed program supplies, she said. On hand to receive the donation were Smith (holding check with Kah- Nee-Ta general manager Garland Brunoe), and Boys and Girls Club members and staff. Fisheries service urges denial of permit (AP) — The National Marine Fisheries Service says a p ro posed liquefied natural gas ter minal on the Columbia River likely w ould harm valuable salmon habitat. The federal agency urged the Army Corps o f Engineers to deny NorthernStar Natural Gas Inc, a permit to dredge the river, at least until the NMFS has more information. A NorthernStar spokesman characterized the letter last month as routine. Joe D esm ond, a NorthernStar senior vice presi dent, says without more infor mation “they're pot in a position to say yes.” But the Fisheries Services says building and operating the terminal and dredging to make way for massive tankers likely would affect the estuary's vital habitat. Toys-Tools-Housewares-Clothing-Crafts-Gifts- Niix Pachwai inmi naimuma! Inashwanisha Malia LaLonie Collins. I would like to thank everyone for supporting me this past year for the 2007-2008 Ju n io r Q ueen for L incoln’s B irthday C elebration in Simnasho. This title has given me many o p p o rtu n ities to m eet new people and to represent our Tribe and bring recognition to the Lincoln’s Celebration. I have been very fortunate in being able to travel the coun tryside and talk on many differ ent microphones! I practiced many times on my introduction and my speech that I performed, but sometimes I forgot to say that Simnasho is in Oregon! I went to so many powwows. I made it to Muckleshoot, Uni versity of Washington in Seattle, Puyallup, P endleton, G ran d Ronde, Portland State Univer sity, Evergreen Community Col lege, Yakama Treaty Days, White Swan, Celilo, Toppenish’s Washington Birthday Celebra tion, Burns, Spokane Indian Days in W ellpinit, Spokane NW IYC powwow, C ouer D ’Alene, California, and o f course, Gathering o f Nations. I also w ent to many local powwows, including Simnasho Shindigs and the New Year’s C elebration we had at the longhouse. We have been so busy traveling, but we were able to Malia LaLonie Collins have two fundraisers at the Community Center. I am walking away from the tide, but I will always have the experience in my heart. I learned how to talk in front o f large groups of people, and I got the chance to meet many veterans and shake their hands. They al ways had a smile for me and they told me that I did a good job. I felt proud standing next to all o f them after each Grand Entry. I want to thank everyone for encouraging me and supporting me this past year by coming to my fundraisers, I couldn’t have done it w ith o u t all o f you. Thank you, Teeney Tappo and Noreen Greene for beading m y Puthlapa, it is very beautiful and I got a lot of compliments on the beadwork. I will always take care o f it and wear it on special occasions. Thank you to my family, es pecially my mom and dad for getting me to all those powwows on time. For my outgoing Special on Feb. 8, 9 and 10, I will be hav ing a Junior Jingle Dress Spe cial for ages 7-9. For first place I will be awarding $500 and a Pendleton Jacket, for second place, $350; and for third place, $250. There will also be conso lation prize money for the girls who place fourth through tenth places. The reason why we chose to have such big prize money is because I have noticed that the adults get a lot o f recognition and us kids hardly do, and so I wanted to change that, at least for my special. I think kids out there work really hard to be come better dancers, and this is my way o f helping them out. My family will also be feeding everyone at the powwow on Saturday during dinner break. I wish the candidates for this year the best o f luck and hope that they take the time to travel and truly represent this powwow! I had the time o f my life and have m ade m any friends throughout the powwow circuit. M a lia C o llin s, 2007-2008 Ju n io r Q ueen fo r L in co ln ’s Birthday Celebration.
