She was born February 28, 1957 in Warm Springs to Earl and Rita Squiemphen. She was a lifetime resident of Warm Springs and an en rolled member of the Con federated Tribes o f Warm Springs. She. was a stay-at-home Mom after she received a kidney transplant in June, 2003. Prior to that she worked as the Administrative Assis tant to the Secretary/Trea- surer of the Confederated Tribes (four o f them , no less!). She also worked as a re porter for the Spilyay Tymoo, Microfilm Operator for the Records Center, Secretary to the Education General Man ager, Key Punch Operator for the Data Processing De partment and various other departm ents durin g high school. She attended school in Warm Springs and Madras, graduating from high school in 1975. She excelled in volleyball, making varsity all four years of high school. She spent several years in the rodeo arena as a world class Barrel Racer and at one M erda Io n e Charley, 1955-2007 M erda Ione C harley passed away at Warm Springs on December 31, 2007. She was 52. Ms. Charley was born on December 25, 1955 to par ents W esley and Jane (Whitefoot) Charley. Ms. Charley was a lifetime resident of Warm Springs. She graduated from Madras High School in 1975. She was point was practicing to be a team roper/breakaway roper. She met Edison Yazzie dur ing her years in the rodeo arena and they were married in June, 1987 at the Warm Springs Bap tist Church. They had two daughters, Teri Jo, age 19, and Amanda Jo, 14. Due to her inability to work, she spent a lot of time fund raising to help her daughters go to various volleyball and basket ball tournaments and camps, plus she helped fund their trip to Holland in 2006. You could always count on seeing her at the Tribal Admin istration building selling her baked items, huckleberry jam and pies, necklaces and beads. She was constantly busy do ing things for her family. Her many interests included her fam ily, playing on the computer, baking, helping on the farm when she could, attending the volleyball and basketball tour naments held throughout Or egon and Washington. She made many friends at these tournaments, getting to know many at a personal level, trading ideas for vari ous ways to help improve her to u rn am en t and m ake money for her daughters’ activities. She touched a lot of lives and will be missed by many. Mrs. Yazzie is survived by husband, Edison; daughters Teri Jo and Amanda; parents, Earl & Rita Squiemphen; sis ters, Valerie and Earlynne Squiem phen, Sammi O ’Reilly, C.R. Begay; and brother, Terry Squiemphen, all of Warm Springs. In lieu o f flow ers, the family requested donations be made to the National Kid ney Foundation and/or The American Cancer Society. Ms. Meanus was born on December 1,1962 to parents Marvin Meanus and Doris Squiemphen. She was a lifelong resident of Warm Springs, and was employed as a caretaker for the state of Oregon. She was 59. Ms. Saludo was born on Septem ber 26, 1948 at Prineville to parents Phillip B oise Sr. and M argaret (Charley) Boise. She was a lifetime resident of Warm Springs. Ms. Saludo was a homemaker and mother. (AP) - An art ist who planned to build a 21- story bronze American Indian monument near Tulsa in time to celebrate the state's centennial said the project is still in the works, even though the initial deadline has passed. Artist Shan Gray said discus sions with potential investors are nearly finished, but there have been holdups in making sure the technology needed to build the monum ent w ill work as planned. Gray's statue is expected to cost about $36 million and be located about seven miles north west of Tulsa on Holmes Peak in Osage County. G ray plans to b uild the bronze image of a warrior with a bald eagle landing on his fore arm and title it “The American.”
