Page 10 December 20, 2007 Spilyay Tyrnoo, Warm Springs,’ Oregon A Look at the News of2007 The bubbly 19-year-old Sallie Polk-Adams is no stranger in the Warm Springs Community. She’s worked and volun teered locally over the years, and now Polk-Adams will be repre senting the community in a new way as Miss Warm Springs 2007. Sallie Polk-Adams Close to 200,000 salmon fry arrived last week at the Warm Springs National Fish Hatchery. The juvenile fish replace some of those lost during a recent ac cident at the hatchery that killed %bout 500,000 of the fry. In other January news: Associate Deputy Secretary o f the Interior James Ca'son toured the Cascade Locks tribal casino site with officials of the Confederated Tribes. The group was also planning to tour the tribal property at Hood River. Elsewhere: Construction was set to'be gin this month on the new build ing that will house thè Warm Springs Tribal Credit Enterprise. The 9,200-square-foot building will be located on the vacant field west of the Administration Building. i The Round Butte Dam is on its way to some major improve ments—-but not without a little heavy construction and a long term plan for restoring fish populations. The tribes and Port land General Electric are partnering to complete a project that will include a new fish pas sage facility as part of the Round Butte Dam Selective Water Withdrawal project. ; It’s a project that has been in the works for approximately 20 years, according to Michael Gauvin, the tribes’ fisheries management supervisor. Mean while: The Museum at Warm Springs Fifth Annual Honor Dinner has named W Richard West Jr., executive director of the National Museum of the American Indian, as winner of this year’s Twanat Award. The museum named Wasco Chief Nelson Wallulatum, and the late Warren R. Clements as recipi ents of the Museum At Warm Springs Lifetime Achievement awards. news: Eagle Tech Systems hosted the grand opening of its tech nology center. The center in cludes computers available to the public, and a cafe. And this news: Not many Would expect to find a direct connection between a small Warm Springs factory and various countries in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. But that is exactly what has been developed through Warm Springs Composite Products. The successful company pro duces fireproofing material made of tectonite along with other product lines that are growing steadily—creating a unique opportunity for export ing. In the last year alone, the export market revenue increased from 10 percent to 26 percent. Elsewhere: ;' At its recent meeting on gov ernance, Tribal Council consid ered a proposal to form three committees out of its own mem bers. The proposal aims to im prove governing practices by en couraging Council to adopt rules and ensure that its members and top tribal officials comjply with them. In other March news: Tribal Council set April 2 as the date of the Tribal Council election. Elsewhere: The Grand Ronde tribe is seeking to amend the 1988 Co lumbia River Gorge National Scenic Area Act to insert the Grand Ronde tribe in land man agement decisions in the Scenic Area. SouTjcces in Oregon and Washington, D^C. have con firmed that Grand Ronde* has proposed an amendment to the law that would include the Grand Ronde tribe in the defi nition of .“Indian Tribes” that have rights and interests in the Gorge. March Celilo Village this month hosted events commemorating thé 50 year anniversary of the flooding of Celilo Falls. About 1,000 people attended the two- day commemoration. Agriculture Secretary carry out their management respon sibilities under tfie Gorge Act. Currendy, the Gorge Act rec ognizes the Warm Springs, Yakatna, Umatilla arid Nez Perce tribes as having rights arid interests in the Gorge. This en titles these tribes to a voice in management of the Natiofial Scenic Area. These rights are off-reserva tion 1855 Treaty fishing, hunt ing and gathering rightà, and certain interest? in land within the National Scenic Area bound • aries. Warm Springs and Yakama,for example, own thou sands of acres of trust land in the Gorge. im s n iW B a ii February Celilo Village announced plans to host a two-day com memoration of CeUlo Falls. The events will begin on Saturday, March 10, the 50-year anniver sary of the inundation of the falls by The Dalles dam. Events continue through. Sunday, March 11. In other February In March, tribal canoes arrive at Celilo Village, during the events commemorating the 50 year anniversary of the flooding of Celilo Falls. About 1,000 people showed up for the events, which lasted two days, Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11. Events were at the park, and at Celilo Village, where the new longhouse was the scene of commemorative ceremonies. Celilo Falls was located eight miles upriver from The Dalles dam, and was flooded on March 10, 1957, ending the tribal fisheries site that had existed since time immemorial. : Gift Certificates Available!
