Lifetime honor awardfor Gold
Basket-weaver Pat Courtney
Gold has received one o f the
nation’s highest honors for a tra­
ditional artist
Courtney Gold was honored
recently with the National En­
dowment for the Arts National
Heritage Fellowship Award, a
lifetime honor.
The award is equivalent to
the title “National Treasure”
award that some countries be­
stow on their outstanding artists.
Starting in 1991, Courtney
Gold, her sister Bernyce, and
Arlene Boileau w orked with
Mary Schlick through the Tra­
ditional Arts Program o f Port­
land to learn basket, weaving.
They helped revive the art of
full-turn twining of Wasco bas­
kets with their geometric images.
Courtney Gold has twined

The topic of the essay con­
