nation’s highest honors for a tra
ditional artist
Courtney Gold was honored
recently with the National En
dowment for the Arts National
Heritage Fellowship Award, a
lifetime honor.
The award is equivalent to
the title “National Treasure”
award that some countries be
stow on their outstanding artists.
Starting in 1991, Courtney
Gold, her sister Bernyce, and
Arlene Boileau w orked with
Mary Schlick through the Tra
ditional Arts Program o f Port
land to learn basket, weaving.
They helped revive the art of
full-turn twining of Wasco bas
kets with their geometric images.
