The total adult returns of h atch ery sp rin g C hinook salmon to the Deschutes River are projected to be approxi mately 2,350. H ighlights o f Resolution 10,721 are as follows: - From April 1st to June 15th Sherars Falls will be open, seven days a week. - The fishery will be open for hatchery spring Chinook and hatchery steelhead only. - All wild salmon and steel- head must be returned to the river unharmed. B y L arry H olliday Fisheries Harvest Manager The Sherars Falls spring Chi nook resolution was presented by fisheries staff to the On-Res ervation Fish and Wildlife Com mittee. On March 19, Tribal Council made a motion and ap proved Resolution 10,721 for the 2007 season. The 2007 predicted return for the Deschutes River is pro jected to be 1,200 wild spring Chinook, which is lower than the wild escapement goal of 1,300 wild fish over the hatch ery weir. T he retu rn o f h atch ery spring Chinook salmon to the - Warm Springs Tribal Code 340.310(8) req u irin g that dipnets and hoop nets (nets and hoops must be attached to a pole) are attended continuously, will be enforced. - Hook and line fishing, one pole per person, single hook only is allowed. - Intentional snagging of fish is prohibited. Any fish that is snagged incidentally and is in viable condition must be re turned to the river. - All Chinook salmon and steelhead caught are for subsis tence purposes only. No sales to the public are allowed. - Alcohol or drugs prohibited. - Warm Springs Tribal Code School budget meeting egon. This is a public meeting where deliberation o f the Budget Committee will take place. Subsequent Budget C om m ittee m eetings are scheduled for May 8 and May 17 at the same time and lo cation as the first meeting. Any person may appear at the meetings. Public ques tions and comments will be taken at the May 8 and May 17 meetings. The location of the meetings is accessible to the disabled. A public meeting of the B ud get C o m m ittee o f Jefferson County School Dis trict 509-J, Jefferson County, State of Oregon, to discuss the budget for the fiscal year July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008 will be held in the Support Services Building, 445 SE Buff St., Madras. The meet ing will take place on May 1 at 7 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to receive the bud get message and document of the district. A copy of the budget document may be in spected on or after May 2, 2007 at the Support Services Building or at the Jefferson County Public Library, 241 SE Seventh, M adras, Or 340.700 and 341.140 shall be strictiy enforced. The 2007 pre-season forecast of upriver spring Chinook to the Columbia River is 78,500, which is lower than the 2006 pre-season forecast of 88,400. In 2006, the spring Chinook run timing was approximately 2 to 3 weeks later then usual. The final count at Bonneville Dam of returning spring Chinook exceeded the pre-season fore cast at 132,100. Neda Wesley took time to honor several com m unity members during the senior’s luncheon at High Lookee Lodge recendy. “I wanted to make this a very thankful time,” Wesley explained. A cco rd in g to W esley, “The reason I’m doing this is too many times we over look the thoughtful things our people do for us.” Wesley said they typically honor a community member each month, and when she learned they didn’t have a per son named she chose to take time to deliver a few expres sions o f gratitude- fb people in her life. At one point, Wesley said, she fell serio u sly ill and needed assistance. When Charlotte Herkshan found her, Wesley said, she immediately offered to help by taking Wesley to the hos pital. “She took me and she stayed with me all night,” Wesley said. In Herkshan’s opinion, she was able to help a woman who has been influential in her life. A cco rd in g to H erkshan , “This lady has taught me so much.” From the time she was young and Wesley taught a 4-H club in Simnasho, Herkshan said, she has been learning from her. “I re a lly treasu re h er,” Herkshan added. “I treasure a NOW till March 3 1 st lot of our elders.” Wesley also thanked Cap tain and Keith Moody. A fter her husband re tired, Wesley said, the two men hunted for her family. “We really, really adore them and thank them for thinking of us,” Wesley said. James Holliday also re ceived an expression o f g ratitu d e for p ro vid in g Wesley’s family with an ice chest full of meat. “We feel very gratified,” Wesley said. In addition, Wesley ex pressed her gratitude for Olivia Wallulatum. “She and her children dig roots for me,” Wesley ex plained. She was 89. Mrs. Barney was born on July 3,1917 at Warm Springs to parents Ed and Ellen (Fos ter) Hawley. She was married to Theodore Barney, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Barney was a lifetime •* resident o f Warm Springs who was employed as a cook for the Warm Springs Senior Center for many years. Julia was a member of the Warm Springs Baptist Church. She was fluent in her Native language. Mrs. Barney loved her family and her dog. She enjoyed crocheting bedspreads and making home made breads and jams. Airs.
