Spilyay Tym oo, W arm Springs, Oregon Bulldogs top Buffs 103-76 By Sid M iller Spilyay Publisher Pmeritus The Hermiston Bulldogs, a highly rated team in the state, handed the Madras White Buf faloes a 103-76 b eatin g at Hermiston on Jan. 23. Hermiston is leading the In termountain League with a six win and zero loss record. The loss for the Buffs puts them in a tie for second place with a 4-2 record. Jansen Harrington and A.J. Adams led the scoring for Ma dras as each had 14 points apiece. The Bulldogs out scored the Buffs at the end of the first quarter 26-20 and led at half time 53-38. The Buffs got a total of 15 three-pointers dur ing the game, but that wasn’t enough to catch the Bulldogs. Scoring for the Madras White Buffaloes was as follows: A.J. Adams, 14; Jansen Harrington, 14; Carson Ahern, 10; Derrick Metcalf, 9; Orrin Wallace, 8; D arrell C eciliani, 5; Robert Main, 4; Ethan Adams, 3; Albert Adams, 3; Josh Roth, 3; Logan Kneeland, 3. H erm iston runs past Buffs 70-55 B y Sid M iller Spilyay Publisher Pmeritus The Madras White Buffaloes girls were unable to keep up w ith the visiting H erm iston Bulldogs as they jumped right out into an 8-0 lead within a few minutes of the first quarter and they went right out to lead 19-8 at the end of the first quarter. The visitors were determined to show that they were here for one purpose and that was to win the game. W ith their quickness they scored on several Buff turn overs on fast breaks. Their full court press gave the Buffs prob lems. Saree Morrison, a 5 7 ” senior, let all scores with 22 points as the speedster breaks away for several easy lay-ups. When the half time intermission came, the Bulldogs led 39-19. For the host Buffaloes it was Briana Stacona leading the way and getting the ball down court, breaking the press with her ball handling. She was the Buffs’ leading scorer with 16 points from one three pointer, and she was 5 of 7 from the free throw line. Shirelle Adams, the quick 5’2” senior, added 11 points for the Buffs and she played a good defensive game. Krista Hangar, who got the B u ff first two points in the game, got several rebounds and was able to score eight points for the Buffs. She was two for two at the free throw line. Yolanda Yallup turned in a good game on defense, getting several rebounds and was able to add eight points for the home team. Jacelene Frank was instru mental on defense, getting right after the ball under both baskets, and she scored seven points. Chrishana Johnson had a good defensive game and scored two points. Sharice Johnson, the 5’3” junior, was able to get the ball down court and set up plays. She scored two points. Klesia Plazola, a 5’8” fresh man, had a good game with her limited playing time and turned in one point to round out the Buffs scorinig. In the first h a lf the Hermiston Bulldogs out-scored Madras 39-19. In the second half the Buffs out-scored the Bulldogs 36-31. Blazin’ Blazers tourney Feb. 16-18 The Third Annual Blazin’ Blazers Co-ed Hoop Tourna ment is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, Feb. 16-18 at Warm Springs. Divisions are third-grade and under; fourth and fifth graders; and sixth and seventh graders. First place winners receive jackets; second place, hooded sw eaters; th ird p lace, crew necks; and fourth place, t-shirts. The boys’ basketball team will travel to Mt. View on Feb. 2. After that they will match up against H erm iston on Feb. 9— freshman and junior varsity play at 5:15 p.m. and varsityr will play at 7 p.m. The team faces off against Pendleton on Feb. 10 in Ma dras with the freshman play ing at 1 p.m., the junior var sity at 2:30 p.m. and the var sity team at 4 p.m. On Feb. 13 they travel to Summit, and on Feb. 16 they will play Crook County" in a home game in Madras, with freshm an playing at 3:30 p.m., junior varsity at 5:15 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m. Next the boys’ teams will travel to The Dalles on Feb. 20 and Bend on Feb. 22. Girls team The girls’ basketball teams will play Alt. View tomorrow, Feb. 2, in Madras. After that the team travels to H erm iston on Feb. 6 and Pendleton on Feb. 10. The girls’ teams will return to Aladras on Feb. 13 to face off again Summit. On Feb. 16 they travel to Crook Co., but will play again in Aladras against The Dalles on Feb. 20 and Bend on Feb. 22. For all the home games the freshman team plays at 3:30, the junior varsity at 5:15 and varsity at 7 p.m. The wrestlers at MHS will face o ff a g ain st C rook County today, Feb. 1, in Ala- dras at 6 p.m. Next they will travel to Hood River on Feb. 3. Dis trict matches are Feb. 9 and Feb. 10 in Hermiston. Seven stud en ts from Warm Springs play on the varsity team: Jacoba Smith, S h irelle A dam s, S h arice Johnson, Jaycelene Frank, Y olanda Y allup, B rian a Stacona and Whitley Ruiz. Kristi Olney, Destry Begay and Alarissa Ahern play for the junior varsity team, while Jillisa Suppah, Karlen Yallup Katherine Quaid, Dena Tho mas, Roschena Sargeant and Angela Bellanger play for the freshman team. W restlin g for Aladras High School for the winter season are ninth grad ers T revor Suppah, L ean d er Smith and Chezzeray Frank. Also wrestling are eleventh graders Rolin Alorningowl and Elliot Cooper and twelfth grader Jasper Smith. Current wrestling results were unavailable. Squiemphen-Yazzie tourney in April The T hird A nnual Squiemphen-Yazzie All-Indian Youth Basketball Tournament will be held at Warm Springs on April 6-8. This is a double elimi nation tournam ent with one championship game. Divisions are 7-8 grade co ed; 9-12 grade co-ed. Limit of eight team s both divisions. Awards for first, second and third place, A ll-Stars, AIVP, sportsm anship, Air. and AIs. Hustle. Players must show proof of enrollment in school and proof of Indian blood. Entry fee is $150 both divi sions. O ther activities include3- point shot; and a dance on Sat urday night, April 7 at 9 p.m. in the Social Hall.
