Events mark inundation anniversary of Celilo Falls
March 10 of this year will
mark the 50-year anniversary
o f the flooding o f Celilo
Falls. There are many events
planned around the region to
commemorate the anniver­
sary.
The Columbia River Inter-

is dedicated to Celilo Falls.

As stated by the fish com­
mission, Celilo Falls was the
site from time immemorial
that “drove tribal economies
and created one of the West­
ern Hemisphere’s great mar­
ket places...”
“During high water, nearly
one m illion cubic feet of
water per second — five times
the flow of Niagara Falls —
would pass over the basalt
rocks, creating a roar that
could be heard many miles
aw ay... On the morning of
March 10, 1957, the gates of
The Dalles Dam closed and
choked back the Columbia
River. Six hours later Celilo
Falls was gone.”

Rudy K aye Paul Sr.
passed away on December
29, 2006 at his home. He
was 61.
Mr. Paul was born Oc­
tober 3, 1945 at Warm
Springs to parents Felix
Paul and Eunice Charley.
Mr. Paul was a lifelong
resident of Warm Springs.
He enjoyed bowling, hunt­
ing and fishing.
He is survived by his
sons Rudy Paul Jr. o f
Warm Springs, and Smart
Paul of Fossil; and sister
Paulette Hawley of Warm
Springs. A brother and sis­
ter preceded him in death.
