(AP) - A measure that would help American Indian veterans be buried in veterans cemeteries on tribal land has gone to President Bush for his signature to be come law. The Native American Veter ans Cemetery Act, sponsored by Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., passed Congress on Saturday. It allows tribes to apply for grants to establish, expand or improve tribal veterans' cem- eteries on Indian trust land, put ting tribes on the same level as states. Tribes currently are not eligible for cemetery grant funds from the Department o f Vet erans Affairs. “ Native American soldiers who have served or perished protecting our country in the line o f duty deserve to be hon ored and buried at home,” Udall said. Some reservations have cem eteries for veterans, but they're operated by tribal organizations or volunteers. Nearly 20,000 American In dians or Alaskan Natives cur rently serve in the military, ac cording to the Defense Depart ment. The VA says that by the end o f 2006, there will be an estim ated 181,361 American Indian veterans.
