Cally Young, a star volleyball player from Bend, was only re cently adopted by the tribe and said her family is still searching for inform ation about their rela- tives. Several years ago Young was a d o p te d as a trib a l m em b e r along w ith her m other, Wendy, and 21-year-old brother Cody. T h e g r a n d d a u g h te r o f A udrey Faye G eorge and th e great-granddaughter o f Sylvia W an a n iw it, Y o u n g said h e r family’s recent addition to the tribe has been m onum ental for them. “ M y m o th e r h a d alw ays talked to m e the way my grand m other spoke to her in regards to always be very p roud o f our heritage,” she said. “T he fact that the tribe has adopted us is huge. We are so happy to fi- i nally be a part o f som ething— I it’s great finally having a family ; o f our own.” Young, a senior at Mt. View H igh School, has quickly b e come an all-star volleyball player since beginning the sport in sev- * enth grade. Now, Young said, “Volleyball has changed m y life in m any ways.” She has played as a setter at the school level for six years and has also played club volleyball for six years. “I really enjoy the travel vol leyball club because I have got ten to travel to tournam ents,” she said. W ith the club Young has traveled through the U.S. to lo catio n s such as Las Vegas, Reno, Seattle and Spokane. Young added, “I t is really fun to play other teams from all over the U nited States and different countries such as P uerto Rico and Brazil.” i As a setter, Young earned a place on the Ju n io r N ational Volleyball team that placed sev enth nationwide. The Young family. This year Young was chosen as player o f the year out o f 96 fellow athletes— in the past she has also received honors for her skills in the Inter-M ountain Con ference. W ith Mt. View H igh School, Young has com peted in the state championship during her sopho m ore, junior and senior years— this year her team was ranked first at the 5A level going into the championships but narrowly m issed the cham pion title. After she finishes high school this year, the young athlete plans to pursue volleyball in college as well. “ I am c u rre n tly bein g r e cruited by E astern O regon U ni versity, Southern O regon U ni versity, Seatde University, Seattle Pacific University and the Uni versity o f Hawaii at H ilo,” she said. “I hav en ’t fully decided on m y m ajor yet because it de pends on w hich college I at tend.” H ow ever, Y oung said, she plans to pursue either marine 'science o r veterinary science.- ’ For now, Young and her fam ily are hoping to form a rela tionship with family members in W arm Springs that they didn’t know before. “A lthough we haven’t gotten to know our W arm Springs fam ily yet, we are hoping they will a c c e p t us w ith o p e n a rm s,” Young said.
