Submitted photo A Celebration of Salmon and a Rally for Action Grandson dedicates rodeo ride Anthony Andrews was one of many participants in this year’s Squiemphen-Yazzie Kids Rodeo. However, Andrews had something special in mind when it came to this year’s event: he wanted to dedicate his participa tion in the steer riding events to his deceased grandfather, Elliott Switzler. Andrews said he was very close to his grandfather, who passed away two years ago. “I just liked it when he came over because he spent a lot of time with us,” he said. After dedicating his steer riding to his grandfather, Andrews said, “It made me feel a lot happier.” Andrews is a 14-year-old rodeo enthusiast. This year he participated in steer riding and the wild colt race, and said he won a buckle in each event. He has been involved in rodeo for nearly two years. “My dad got me into it because he used to bull ride,” Andrews said. “I wanted to get into it, so he started buying me stuff to get into rodeos.” Andrews plans to continue participating in rodeos for years to come, and says his favorite part is “just tiding it.” Andrews is the grandson of Laura Switzler of Warm Springs, and the son of Darryl and Sally Armour, and Gil bert Andrews. ---- By Leslie Mitts Join guest speaker David James Duncan and leaders from the Pacific Northwest tribal and fishing com m unities for food, fam ily fun and straight ta lk about the failure of leadership to protect our shared fishing heritage.
