Tribal construction workers are learning new skills as part of a partnership between the Sisters Ranger District, Oregon N atu ral R eso u rce C o un cil, Geovisions and Warm Springs Forest Product Industries. Jim C rocker, m anager o f Geovisions, said the project is funded in part by a resource advisory council grant. The project is aimed toward restoring the meadow located near Black Butte Ranch. The restoration project aims to expand the amount of old growth in the forest. When the groups began to restore the area, they needed to know where all the trails and roads are, Pajutee said. “We didn’t really know where they were and just needed somebody to walk through these forests and find them all,” she added. “This is an area that we know was traditionally used by the tribes,” Pajutee continued, for hunting and herding horses. In Pajutee’s opinion, “It was great to get tribal members back out there just to tell us what they saw and help us w ith the project.” there,” Crocker said. “It’s nice to see them getting some skills with the GPS.” According to Crocker, “They go out every day and GPS roads and trails and then bring them back in.” After that, he said, Geovisions downloads the data for those involved in the project. “T h e y ’re m akin g good progress,” Crocker added. “It’s a nice partnership with the for est service.” According to Maret Pajutee, district ecologist for the Sisters Ranger District, up to four tribal members worked for ten days for the Glaze Meadow Resto ration Project. O f the workers, Pajutee said, “They hadn’t worked much off o f the reservation before, and it was new skills they were learn ing in terms of GPS.” “It’s a really exciting project for us because it’s a partnership project,” Pajutee added.
