Pgge 6 Spilyay Tymoo July 20 Fire and safety adds position A new position has been cre ated at Fire and Safety and is being filled by a current em ployee. Troy Thom has worked for Fire and Safety for four years as a firefighter/EMT, and will continue to do so— with a couple added responsibilities. Now Thom will serve as the Public In fo rm atio n O ffice r (PIO) as well. “Basically my job is to release information to media on large scale operations,” Thom said. “The position acts as a buffer between the command structure and what’s going on.” In the past that duty was placed upon other staff mem bers, giving them added respon sibility. “The chief was fielding tons o f phone calls and tons o f requests for information from various media sources,” Thom said. “It frees his time up on a situ ation to do what his job is,” he added. The position isn’t one that has just been created spontane ously. “It’s one o f those positions that fire departments have. It’s not something that has been cre ated just for us,” Thom said. “Redmond, Madras, everyone’s got them.
