E Coosb EEWA: The wgy it Pgge 4 Spilyay Tymoo April 13, 2006 Letters to the Editor Appointments Powwow The Warms Springs Heath and Wellness Center is encour aging you, as the patient, to make appointments to see the doctor, nurse practitioner, dia betes staff and dentist. Once you make an appoint ment to be seen in any depart ment, it is very important that you keep your appointment and show up 10 minutes before to update your information at the registration desk. This is so we have the cor rect address and phone number in case we have to send you a letter or call you for any rea son. We need to make sure we have the correct insurance in formation and assist you in ap plying for Medicare or Oregon Health Plan if you are eligible. We are required to ask these questions every time you come in to the clinic. It may seem redundant or silly to be re-asked questions you just answered on your last visit but we need to follow the regu lations we are told to follow. We have more people want ing to see medical clinic provid ers and dentists in any given day then we have appointments. This is why it is important that you just do not show up for your appointment and call if you cannot make it so someone else can be given your time slot. Thanks for helping us de crease the num ber o f people who do not come in for their appointments. C arol D evaney, chief ex e c u tiv e o ffic e r o f the IH S clinic. Concern I sit here and listen to young p eo p le talk ab o u t w ho go t punked out, shot or jum ped over the w eeken d, all for a color, a number, a letter. It’s bad enough alcohol and drugs are killing our Native people off. Now our Native kids are killing each other off. Our kids are supposed to be the future, but I’m scared for my litde kids. I don’t want them to grow up around such violence. If these gangsters are so tough, then why not go to Iraq and fight in the war instead-of fighting your own N ative brothers and sisters. Signed, a worried mother. Great career This is to our uncle Marvin T. Meanus Sr. on your great re tirement and for all your years of hard work, time and effort, for all the service and most of all the dedication you put into your work and job duties. We’re very thankful for having a wonderful, thoughtful, very helpful and caring uncle like you. And we thank you for all the help you have done for us. So we can gladly say that we love you very much, uncle, and w ant to say that we are very proud o f you and congratula tions on your retirement. So, no you can take it easy, relax and enjoy yourself, or even take a vacation, anything you want to do you do it. You’ve certainly earned it and, uncle, take good care o f yo u rself because we love you. To all our cousins we encour age you to love, care for, watch over and protect your father because uncle M arvin (cow hand) is a very nice gendeman, and very special to us as I’m sure he is to you guys also. So it’s now up to you guys to see to it that uncle is happy and also, cousins, keep him company, same with the grandchildren. He would love and enjoy each and every one of you in good company. So it ’s u n cle’s turn to do whatever he would like to do and take his retirem en t for granted. And be comforted and not have any worries about work any more. To close this, we would like to let all of you know we love you guys also and please spend time with your father, our uncle. A nd take good care o f him. Show him that he is loved by all of you and one more thing, may God bless each and every one of you, and take good care of yourselves also, because we’re family. We love you all. Exhibit The National Park Service’s traveling tent show will be ar riving at the Museum at Warm Springs and holding lectures, videos, speeches A pril 22-25. Those two lost white guys, Lewis and Clark, were near Wappato Islan d area, now know n as Sauvie’s Island (why the name change?). On April 3, 1806: “... an old m an who appeared o f some note among them and father to m y guide brought forward a woman who was badly marked with the small pox, and made signs that they all died with the disorder which marked her face, and which she was very near dying with when a girl, from the age of this woman this destruc tive disorder I judge must have been about 28 or 30 years past, and about the time the Clatsops informed tri that this disorder raged in th e ir tow ns and I« ! -N Y /-. rfv '• \ i . \ iff. > ■ , 'v; v , , J u . li. They hoped to amass a sufficient quantity to last them till th ey reach ed the N ez Perces. Since the rain was al most continuous, they had to dry it over fires. Overcast skies pre vented them from making ce lestial observations and gales lashed the river to turbulence. In the wide river below the mouth of the Willamette, they had not realized how much the spring flood was adding to the difficulty o f their progress.” (DeVoto’s notes on Chapter XXV, From Sandy River to The Dalles of the Columbia.) Note: All of the area below Celilo Falls was Chinookan, the U pper Chinookan know n as The Dalles Wascos, Dog River Wascos and the Cascade Wascos (known in the Middle Oregon Treaty o f 1855 as Ki-gal-twa- lals.) The Kiksht, or Chinookan language went from below Celilo F alls to the m o uth o f the Colum bia. It can be guessed that runners were passing the word about what these interlop ers were doing, gathering food and p rep arin g to m ove u p stream. The mighty Wascos I am sure had the red carpet laid out for them. Louie Pitt. Regarding letters Thank you for writing to the Spilyay Tymoo.
