I really enjoy all the activities you bring for my children to learn. My family has been with the Early H eadstart Program for a little over a year now and I can see the results within my children. When I first started the pro gram my daughter was in a tran sition stage getting ready for the fall, when she would start part day. She was easily frightened and was not used to kids her own age. She would cry any time anybody w ould acknowledge her. After she got used to Tricia coming into my home bringing things for and her brother to play with, or create a learning project with, she started to open up to new things as well as new friends. At the group socializations, let me tell you, in the beginning my son would not sit to eat our meals, but now it’s so much bet ter and easier to communicate with my children. I encourage the stay-at-home parents to join the program. Not only will it benefit your kids but you’ll also get to meet the other parents (if you don’t already know them), and take with you som e o f the in fo rm a tio n brought to you in the program. E arly H eadstart Program : Home visitors will come to your home. Group socializations are when kids get to play with other kids their age, and hands on learning experiences. There is tra n sp o rta tio n to p ro gram events, or classes. This is the program I have been involved with and will be with my son, who is now 10 months old, until he is ready to make that transition into the H ead S tart program . A gain many thanks to Patricia Brown, Kristin H., Wanda, and Michelle - Early Head Start staff. Unity is a word that has brought this country a long way. Everyone helping one another in whatever task that is at hand. There are things that one person or one group cannot get by without the help from some other person or groups. This country has struggled right from the start when people helped one another. Everyone helping one an other to get along brought all the people together to work as one. They found out that uniting made them a Spilyay stronger group. Sometimes this meant some Speaks k______ 2 would sacrifice their good fortune to help their neighbor so» everyone would live equally. There isn’t an individual or group of people that got by without the help of their neighbors. No matter what type of business or venture is taken, it’s hard to accom plish without the backing of others. Everyone has to work for what he gets and the harder he works the better the results are for that person or group whichever the case may be. This prevents the saying, “What’s mine is mine, and what’s yours is mine!” But should read, “What’s mine is yours, and what’s yours is mine.” Everyone working together with that certain goal, and that’s for everyone to get ahead in this cruel world. However, there is always some that don’t see things that way and think of themselves to get ahead of every one else. Like to get the cream of the crop. A few years back an issue came up before all the tribes where they had to make a big decision for their future. These years were referred to as, “Termination,” where all the tribal members would get thousands of dollars for their share of the reservation. If the tribe decided to take the money they would lose their status as Indians. There would be no more tribal rights and they would fit into the everyday life as the non-Indians with no protec- j tion of the reservation. They would sell out all their rights to hunting, fishing, gathering fruits and vegetation as in the past. Those dollar signs sounded and looked good to several and they agreed to accept the money offered. Thirty to 40 thousand dollars per individual. They lived happy for a time, with everyone driving new cars, living it up. We here in Warm Springs all voted against Termina tion to keep our reservation in tact. Even though it seemed like a struggle, and seeing other tribes spending R ob erta T hom as, their money, we managed to get by. Many thanks I know that this might be a year or so late, but better late than never, right? I would like to thank my mom and family for putting on a dinner for me the first time I got back from Iraq in October 2003. My mother may have not al ways agreed with decisions that I made in life but I was glad that Sister Pauline had talked to you, mom, to show you my point of view. As you can all see, joining the military may have been the thing to really open my eyes and help become who I am today. I am honored to say that I am my mother’s daughter. I have finished two tours in Iraq and still a possibility that I may go back in September for a third time. I am thankful for all the sup port I have received from my family and friends. I would like to thank all the Greenes, Reeds, Staconas and Lumpmouths. I would like to thank my God P aren ts Jim and T h elm a Coburn for the creative cake that they brought for my dinner and all the other things they have seen me through. G randm a Bernice for all her prayers and acknowledgment o f reminding others that we have our own trib a l m em b ers th at w ere present during war times. Wendell Cook (belated) and his kids for their never ending support of letters of encourage m ent to know that even our nation has their own opinion; they are still there for the ones who don’t have a choice in what they are fighting for. Gerald, I heard about your speech that you gave at the high school and I was honored that you men tioned my name and that both you and your sister have some one to look up to. I wish my (belated) Grandpa Truman Lum pm outh Sr. and (belated) Grandma Mico Chase could have been here to see what all I have accomplished. I know that they have been watch ing over me and brought me home safely. I miss them so much, but I know they are in a better place up above with our dear lord, where they still pro tect and live with us in our ev eryday lives. I want to thank the Catholic Parish members for all o f th eir prayers and I send much gratitude to all o f them for keeping the military men and women in their daily prayers. I thank you for believing that I could do some thing with my life and to see the world. You have been my father figure since the day you came back from the Navy and your opinion has always m eant so much to me. I am glad that you are “my dad” and set the stan dards even higher for us. I love you, Dad! To Grandpa Chief Nelson for dedicating a feather in honor o f me and being at m y late gran d p a L e v i’s fu n eral, for which I was able to come home for. To all the veterans who hon ored my Grandpa Levi, thank you for including me in the cer emony to say my last farewell to my beloved grandpa. A big thank-you to all who came to the dinner and to the people who gave me beautiful gifts. To Austin Smith Jr.’s fam ily for giving me a blanket which my Aunt Kim accepted on my behalf and my prayers are with you Austin Jr., Semper Fi. I know that I am forgetting some names and please forgive me. We would like to take this opportu nity to thank them. First, we would like to thank the elders, singers, and dancers, who attended the Sing and gave us support through their beauti ful words and presence. Neda and Jim m y Wesley, their daugh ter A u ro lyn , and E liza and Harvey Jim have supported us for years now with our trail and overall support. Martina and Lucinda worked extremely hard on shawls for us. Even our godson Wesley con tributes to our trail with his own toys and piggy bank money. Marella and Robert Sam and their family have cooked for us for three years ever since we started in Corbett two years ago. N ot only did the Sam family cook, they help ed keep the longhouse clean and the grounds picked up. They were there to help in whatever way they were needed. Thank-you Sam fam- iiy. And thank-you to Plum Gil bert for all her hard work, smiles and go o d energy. L in d se y Howtopat echoed tirelessly with no relief throughout the entire sing and did a wonderful job. C h arlo tte Shike and H ild a Culpus helped out w ith food and trail items. Percy Blackwolf baked pies for each night. Christine and Clifton Bruno and their sons helped out with the trail and being our pack horses. We were so glad to see our Katchia family who took time out of their busy family obliga tions to show their support. And thank-you to Bernice for her beautiful words about the He He Longhouse and advice on how we should close the Sing. So many people helped, and even though we can’t mention all by name, we did notice and have much gratitude for you. And thank-you to all the people w ho atten d ed the Sing, the longhouse was filled with your prayers and love, and it was beautiful. We thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts.
