So many of us are sorry to see our short summer growing season come to an end, particularly if an early frost has caused us to worry about our veggies still on the vines. Others are happy because we can step back and enjoy the harvest of fruits, veggies and flowers that we nurtured all summer. Most of us appreciate the frosty mornings because it brings us the beautiful gold, red and orange leaves on the aspen, maple and birch trees, even if it means a bit of work when we have to rake them off the ground. Want to plant a tree that gives you shade in the summer and Over 600 participate in re-enactment WEIPPE, Idaho (AP)-The re-enactment of the first meet ing between frontier explorers Lewis and Clark and the Nez Perce Indian tribe was played out in a northern Idaho meadow with a cast of some 600 specta tors joining in the commemora tion of the 200th anniversary of the historic moment. The re-enactment was part of the bicentennial trek of the Corps of Discovery through Idaho on their way west, retrac ing the steps taken two centu ries ago by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. President Thomas Jefferson sent the explorers on the 1803 1806 journey to the just-acquired Louisiana Purchase to discover what the U.S. had bought, to learn about the in habitants, to seek a water route to the Pacific and to catalogue the plants, rocks, soils and ani mals they found. Recreating what history has recorded of the Sept. 20, 1805 event, the great-great-great-grandson of William Clark topped a grassy hill in a meadow several miles outside of Weippe. Hundreds of school children, local residents and history buffs had walked the route in advance of Bud Clark and sat around the meadow to watch. Clark rode horseback into the camp of the descendants of Watkuweis, the Nez Perce woman who urged the tribe to trust Lewis and Clark two cen turies ago. produces great fall colors? Maples have long been favor ites with their red-orange leaves. The Acerginnala or Amur Maple is a great tree for our area. It grows as a small tree or large multi-stem shrub and at matu rity will be about 15-18 feet tall by 15-18 feet wide. The sum mer leaves are dark and glossy green, and they make a lovely summer shade tree. Plant it in full sun, for the best fall color. The tree can also be planted in part shade. It requires low to moderate water usage. - The OSU Extension Service Master Gardeners final Lunch and Learn session will be held on Monday, Oct. 10, from 12 to 1 p.m. in the downstairs 4-H conference room.
