WARM SPIM(,s , Mfi jr j Dave McMecfianSpilyay Victims of Crime Services held a march through Warm Springs last week, raising awareness of the problem of domestic violence. October is Domestic Vio lence Awareness Month. The following events are planned at the Warm Springs Health and Wellness Center to raise awareness: Tuesday and Wednes day, Oct. 19-20: Rez vio lence and anger resolution with Arlie Neskahi at the wellness center Social Hall. Wednesday, Oct. 20: Parenting class at the Commu nity Counseling Center. Thursday and Friday, Oct. 21-22: "Signs and Symptom of Child Abuse," put on by the Kids Center of Bend at the Community Wellness Cen ter Social Hall. Tuesday, Oct. 26: Tribal Court alcohol and drug class will present domestic violencechild abuse prevention. Wednesday, Oct. 27: Parenting class at the Commu nity Counseling Center. Wednesday, Oct. 27: Can cer 101 community workshop on breast and cervical cancer. Contact the CHET Program for more information. w Thursday, Oct. 28: Methamphetamine confer ence and the Community Wellness Center Social Hall. The week of October 25: Red Ribbon week activi ties at the Community Wellness Center. Don't miss Halloween activities A trip to the pumpkin patch, Great Punkin Party, and employee costume contest are part of the upcoming Halloween activities in Warm Springs. The trip to the pumpkin patch will be on Friday, Oct. 22. The bus leaves the Community Center at 1 p.m. Bring a jacket and $5 for admission. The Great Punkin Party is Monday, Oct. 25 at the Commu nity Center Social Hall, beginning at 6 p.m. Bring a pumpkin and a knife. The employee costume contest will be at 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 29 in the lobby of the administration building. Carnival to include fashion, gong show The Freaky Fashion Show and Ghouley Gong Show will be part of the Warm Springs Halloween Carnival. The Halloween Carnival begins at 6 p.m. on Halloween at the Community Cen ter. Booth set-ups will begin at 3 p.m. All are invited to set up their own booths. Sign-up at the carnival to be a part of the fashion and gong (talent) shows. For information call Carol at the Community Center, 553 3243. Dialysis support group meets Oct. 26 There will be a dialysis support group beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at the Senior Center. Menu: meatloaf and bring your own favorite Halloween food item. Everyone welcome; come dressed in costume. Join in the fun, food, laughter and education. Great attendance so far at middle school The month of September was a great one for Native American students attending Jefferson County Middle School. There are a total of 251 Indian students at the school, from sixth grade through eighth. Attendance among tribal member students was above 90 percent, according to the middle school. There are 16 new teachers at the middle school. Before school began last month the new teach ers took at tour of Warm Springs and Simnasho, to learn more about the reservation. Several Warm Springs commu nity members volunteered to speak to the teachers, inform ing them about the reservation. Also, there was an open house at the middle school on Sept. 30, and many parents and students attended. For the month of September there were 17 school days. The following students had perfect attendance during the month. Topic will be College 101: Fundamentals of success at higher education; and scholarships (search, apply and complete). The goal of the Gear Up group is: Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. And the Aspire group: Access to Students Assistants Program In Reach of Everyone. Aspire helps students with getting on board with SAT ACT tests, federal government financial aid, essays, college search and appli cations, and scholarships. Seminar on the basics of beef A gathering and seminar, Beef Basics, is set for 4-6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 21 at the Warm Springs Rodeo Grounds. Speakers will be Cory Parsons, OSU Extension livestock agent; Fara Ann Currim, OSU Extension Warm Springs agriculture agent; and Mark McFarland, veterinarian. There will be questions and answers on beef breeds (sound ness, quality and range savvy); beef nutrition (range and supple mental forage); beef health (McFarland will demonstrate impor tant body qualities on a live animal, as well as sites for vaccina tions, etc.); and beef reproduction (breeding for optimal quality).
