Pqge 10 Spilyay Tyrooo, Wqrrn Springs, Oregon Odober 1420041- 4- fe opening of the national museum r C: 7'v H"?rw Springs elders' trip to Washington, D.C., for the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian, started out a little rough but then got a lot better. The elders arrived early in the morning at the Portland Airport, ready for the flight to Washington D.C, said Lawrence Squiemphen, of the Seniors Department staff, who accompanied the elders on the trip. After a long delay they learned that their flight would be cancelled due to a mechani cal problem with the plane. Luckily, they were able to find another flight, pith the one drawback being that they had a four-hour layover in Seattle. So when they finally arrived at the nation's capital, they were very tired and also almost late for the museum opening procession, said Squiemphen. They all made it though. And among the 25,000 or so Indians at the event, the elders were able to locate the other parties from Warm Springs. They did this by sighting the flag of the Confederated Tribes, held high above the procession crowd. They marched in the procession, toured the new museum, and then spent a couple of days seeing the sights of Washington, D.C. The elders and others who attended the opening of the Na tional Museum of the American Indian will never forget the experience, said Seniors Department staff member Wilson Wewa Jr. "It was awesome, " said Wewa. ,, "It was good to be a part of a once in a lifetime event. " He said that he was expecting maybe 5,000 to be on hand for the opening procession. It was awesome seeing the gathering of more than 25,000 indigenous people, said Wewa. "I don't think we'll ever see that many Native American people in one place at the same time again, " he said. "Not in our lifetime anyway. " , v. .t He said that most people who toured the museum thought it was very interesting. Wewa said he would like to have seen more beadwork among the exhibits; and some people said the museum downplayed the genocide inflicted on Native Americans. But overall, he said, the museum was very well put together. 'When you look at the overall intent of the museum, they did a good job, " he said. WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL A V'-V V ''V ' .
