Everyone was always mentioning how they just got a couple of yards of mulch for their garden, or they were making mulch, or those lawn clippings can make great mulch. It really caught my ear when they mentioned that they didn't have to weed as much, if you just put down some good mulch. Some people would talk about pine needles, others bark chips. I was confused to say the least. What is mulch and how do you use it? Mulch is any material placed ,on , the. soil surface to conserve soil moisture, moderate soil tern-, perature? andor control weeds. Wood chips, bark chips, and shredded leaves are examples of organic mulch. You can also use materials such as rocks, or newspapers (not colored), even plastic can be used. There are actually more pos sibilities, but the point is that you can help reduce the amount of work that goes into your garden by using mulch. Of course, there is always a catch to a good thing. You actu ally have to have a plan, know what mulches are good for what plants, as the wrong kind of mulch could harm some of your plants. Alcohol and drug classes start this month Alcohol and drug educa tion classes through tribal prosecution will be held ev ery other Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at tribal courtroom No. 1 at the courthouse in Warm Springs. Dates are as follows: Sept. 28; Oct. 12 and 26; Nov. 9 and 23; Dec. 14 and 28; Jan. 11 and 25 (2005); Feb. 8 and 22; March 8 and 22; April 8 and 22; May 13 and 27. Those who are court or dered are required to at tend. Please feel free to call tribal prosecution at 553 3300 if you have any questions. J V I yv-.....'jt. ... , L-" .- ' - Mulch can be applied in both winter, and summer for year round weed control. Mulch materials may be home gener- ated, or purchased at your local garden supply center. The latter may run you into some money, but once you get started on us ing mulch it will make a garden attractive, healthy, and easier on maintenance. One can be cre ative and use shells, needles, leaves or bark. It's always good to talk over your needs with your local gar den supply expert, or call a Master Gardener through OSU extension services for the latest up to date information. If you have access to a computer, an excellent source of researched information is on the web at . http:eesc.orst.edu. I guess the most important thought behind mulching, is that it's good for you, good for your plants, and good for the envi ronment. Hope this helps to clear the air about mulching or spark your interest on what your garden needs. , Check with your local nurs eries, to get an idea of the pos sibilities. Then try out a section of your garden to see the re sults. I think you will be im pressed with what mulch can do for you. Happy gardening. Small Hands to Hold Love ...
