The Red Devils were the champions in the boys 13 and under division. By winning their division the team qualified to play in the 2005 Junior Olympics, to be held at Colorado Springs, Colo rado. The division tournament this month was held at the Tualatin Recreation Center, on July 10 11. The Simnasho Red Devils and Mustangs have been hav ing a great season the last couple of years, not winning them all but placing in the top four in the age level and some older divisions, like this tournament. Our first game was against Portland Urban Sports. We won very easily with a score of 66 to 27. Being we had back to VI. Coach Suppah and the Red Devils. photo countiy ol Big Hit back games, I rested all our start ers most of the fourth quarter, to be ready to play our next game. We almost gave it away our second game, against Oregon City. We surprised them by jump ing out to a big lead. They were a good team, never giving up. Our players slacked off, like they won the game already. They got their game together with a full-court press, very effectively. They made a 24 to 4 point run on us, bringing the score within 4 points. We had to call a couple of time-outs, made some substitu tions, finding a combination, to get our game back on track. The team underestimated their opponent, which is a mistake, made by many teams. We played hard, defeating them 67 to 54, moving us into the semi's of the tournament. In the semi's we played well against the Salem Tigers, defeat ing them easily with a score of 51 to 26, putting us in the Championship, waiting for our next opponent, which happened to be Oregon City again. I told the team to prepare for their press, not underestimating them, to play and leave no doubt, so as to qualify for Colorado T ft Dave McUechanSpilyay The Warm Springs Recreation Department recently hosted a basketball clinic for young people of all ages. The kids who participated received t-shirts. Pictured above are some of the younger players who took part in the clinic, held at the Community Center. Springs in 2005 Junior Olym pics. They put their game together, by all contributing to the cham pionship. We defeated Oregon City 76-59 to win the gold medal. I'd like to thank all the par ents for allowing the kids to play. It's getting tough all over, as many parents end up on the unemployment line. So we do appreciate the sup port given to the youth pro grams. The teams do fund-raisers but still need help at times. God bless the companies, businesses and organizations for their sup port, giving the young athletes a chance to participate, keeping them off the streets.
