Arizona tribes work to stem gaming addictions PHOENIX (AP) - Indian tribes want to curb the gambling addictions of roughly six to eight million Americans, who get their fixes in reservation casinos, tribal and industry leaders said. "This was certainly encour aging to hear," said Judith Herriff, executive director of the Michigan Association on Problem Gambling. Herriff was among many treatment professionals and re searchers who attended the 18th annual conference on the Re search, Prevention and Treat ment of Problem Gambling on Friday. At the conference, which was held at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa, tribal leaders spoke about the latest research, prevention and treatment for problem gambling. Mark Van Norman, execu tive director of the National Indian Gaming Association, praised Arizona tribes for tak ing a leadership role in attack ing the issue. Arizona gambling tribes have contributed $.37.8 million of their casino profits to the state, of which $759,140 was allo cated for problem gambling. That money was thanks to one year of revenue sharing under Proposition 202, which was ap proved by voters in 2002. The money goes to the state Department of Gaming, which distributes the money to orga nizations such as ACT Counsel ing in Phoenix and Glendale. The department and Arizona tribes also agreed to allow prob lem gamblers to exclude them selves from the state's casinos. After about a year, the list has 450 names on it, said depart ment spokeswoman Christa Severns. The Arizona Lottery also is contributing to the Department of Gaming. It will contribute $300,000 this fiscal year to go toward problem gambling.
