J Reubin Henry In his statement accepting the nomination, I Icnry said his concern is for the future of the grandchildren, for the lives they will live on the reservation. There is a need for more jobs on the reservation for tribal members. Some tribal members, he said, have to leave the reserva tion to find work. Meanwhile, Laurain Hintsala My name is T'wsayat (Laurain Hintsala). I'm seeking a Tribal Council seat as a means to represent my district and ful fill a long-time goal of being able to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Our children need a strong foundation to fin ish high school and pursue post secondary education. Our young parents need role-modeling to become the parents that will build strong families. Our elders need to feel cherished and re vered. Our community needs to regain ownership of our reser vation. Housing is another concern that he would focus on, as a member of the Council. Also, Henry said his concern is for the future health of the deer and elk and fish. This all can be achieved through education. Education is not just formal education. Edu cation is learning and preserv ing our tribal languages, respect ing the culture of our three tribes, respecting the natural el ements that our Creator pro vided us, respecting others and ourselves. Tribal Council is re sponsible for important decision making and it is equally impor tant that the people are kept in formed of those matters that affect the lives of our entire tribal membership. confidence to do the best job possible if I am elected to take this position of high esteem. My mother, 44 enrolled member of the tribe was from the north end and my father, 4 4, was from the south end of the reservation. I am the great-great granddaughter of Chief Oytcs and leadership has been in our family for genera tions. I have 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren who are my inspiration to do work that would benefit all children. I have worked in the tribal organization for 29 years and am knowledgeable of the con cerns and issues at hand with our tribes' budgets, education (both academics and cultural), envi ronment, and resources. I would do my best to remain aware of these concerns and take into serious consideration, what the people are saying about these issues and concerns. It is impor tant to encourage our people to continue to speak up, so that this Tommy Kalama Here we are another three years, and the elections are upon us again. I would encourage all voters to get to the polls and vote. I hear many people com ment that I hope different people get elected to Tribal Council. It is time to find solu tions to building houses. Jobs will be at the river casino, but jobs should be created in Warm Springs, too. A person earning money is happy, and they can afford to buy a house. School children want to do things to occupy their time, pro grams to keep them busy. A better summer work program would help. Teamwork and ac tion is the first thing that should be done by the new Council. Victor Moses Over the past few years, the Indians' rights have been disap pearing faster than our natural resources. Members having to scrape together funds to defend themselves against tribally paid attorneys, search warrants on people who reported things to a Councilman, fighting for their own homes, proving they were fired illegally, but still being dis criminated against. These are only a few. this past Council has allowed management to run rough shod on anyone who dis agrees or speaks up trying to defend themselves. One of the tribal judges told jurors that they dictate people's guilt or innocence. T torn: V !v 7i-V -'if Be Sure to Vote During March 31 Council Election thing called "silent approval" is a thing of the past. We, as a confederation of three tribes, need and must pro vide a legacy for our generations to come. And this could be pos sible through the Tribal Council's ability to work together and re solve issues cooperatively and effectively for all involved. Sovereignty belongs to all of us and not just a select few. We must continue to recognize and uphold this issue as it belongs to all of us and we are at liberty to practice in ways we feel ap propriate for our people and oursehxs. It is important that everyone take the opportunity to vote on March 31" and to know that I would represent the voice of the people if I were given the privilege to do so, Re spectfully, Myra Johnson Maybe we can make tires for Lcs Schwab on the flat, and then truck them to Portland for him. More small business enterprises for our tribal members. No one left out if they have business training. Everyone needs to suc ceed or fail in a business. We could clear out all the houses from Highway 26, from the school to the fire station and build a business district. Think of ways to put our tribal mem bers to work. I'm sole owner of Tom Kalama Construction, and my wife Jeanine Kalama runs Tom and Jan's Food Service in Warm Springs. Vote for Tommy Kalama for Tribal Council from the See-See-Qua District. Tommy Kalama. Tribal Council is supposed to be protecting members' rights. I see the majority of Council backing the few and turning their backs on everybody else. Then, those that say they are against these actions are just opening the door for it to hap pen to them. Right now tribal members have less rights than non-Indians. The way this group is operating, we won't have any thing. Just think, if someday one of their friends wants something that your family has inherited or worked and saved for, or even your job for one of their kids, do you think this Council will stand up for you? Think about it, ask people that this happened to. Victor Moses. Julie Quaid I am honored to represent my family and district in this year's Tribal Council election. My father is Fred "Buddy" Kalama and my mother is Jean Halfmoon Danzuka. I have three sisters, Judy, Margie, and Celeste and five brothers, Gib, Carl, Frances, Simon, and Michael. I have two daughters, Natalie and Verna, who are in college and high school. Their father is Isaac Mitchell. I have a third daughter, Katherine Quaid and her father is Jim. We share many family activities and share lots of grandparents, aunties, uncles, and cousins. My Umatilla name is Pi-yo-e-kyon-mi, which I received when I graduated from college. My mother told me I earned my Indian name from an honest hard working, strong-willed woman who did not follow the beaten path. I suppose my mother thought the name fit my personality. I have a rewarding, twenty two year old career working for the tribes in early childhood edu cation, K-12 education, and higher education. Over this time, I got to know many fami lies and their children and lots of employees. We all created an effective and responsive sys tem by integrating funding, shar ing facilities, respecting the needs of staff, parents, and higher education students and develop ing program policy that treated everyone fairly and equally. I had elder supervisors who sup ported my work, were generous with their time and I thank them today for their contribution to my development as a person and employee. In the last few years, I as sisted in the remodel concept of the old clinic into the Family Resource Center and developed the library, received an Early Head Start federal grant, and encouraged the state DHS of fices to provide service in Warm Springs. It's important for Tribal Council to share information with the people. , v.. -' : . ... ,A. nerships to address the unmet needs in our community and create employment and career opportunities. I am running for Tribal Council because my experience in the tribal organization gave me insight into our strengths and preparation for the difficult road ahead. The two greatest chal lenges facing us today are pro tecting our assets and natural resources and generating rev enue to support services to our community. We must also take proactive, positive steps to strengthen the infrastructure that supports the branches, departments and pro grams so they might do their best work. Strengthening the infra structure means updating the tribal personnel policies to en sure employees are accountable for their job duties at the same time protecting their employ ment rights. The administrative policies must be updated to cre ate smooth business transactions that result in homes being built quickly, family-wage jobs, and facilities that are safe and last ing. Our greatest underutilized resource is our own people. Everyone must have an equal opportunity to earn an honest living... young, old, disabled, veteran, male and female. We must make thoughtful decisions based on factual information that take into consideration the impact of those decisions now and in the future. We must keep the tribal membership informed at all times of decisions that will impact their lives. I would like your vote on March 31" because I will act in the best interest of the Warm Springs' community and tribal membership and I believe in everyone reaching their full po tential through equal opportu nity. I have demonstrated my commitment, honesty, and trust worthiness and hope to extend my service through a seat on Tribal Council. Thank you. We need to work on our pri orities. Education is an important issue and we want to get the school off the ground.
