Preparing for root season
The Culture and Heritage
Department invites the commu
nity to Friday afternoon classes
in preparation of the Xnit Sea
son. All classes will begin at 1
p.m. at the Education Building,
first floor training room.
The classes are as follows:
Jan. 9, 16, and 23: "Mak
ing your wapus or anpsh."
Culture and Heritage will
have some materials available.
If you have yarn, twine or other
materials, you are encouraged to
bring them. Bring scissors that
can be identified.
Jan. 30 and Feb. 6: "Mak
ing your tl'piip, mitichnipama, or
taatpas winshmi (wingdress,
underdress, or ribbon shirt)."
You will need three or four
yards of your favorite materi
als for each project. Bring a
minimum of five yards of rib
bon in three or more coordi
nated colors (ribbon shirt). You
will need straight pins, match
ing thread, scissors, and if you
have a sewing machine, please
bring it.
Feb. 13 and 20: "Making
a xushxushli (yarn belt)."
You will need a size G or J
crochet hook and yarn. Culture
and Heritage will have some
yarn available.
Feb. 20 and 27, and
March 5: "Making your
wlq'am (moccasins)." Bring your
buckskin, glovers, beads, thread,
and scissors. Culture and I leri
tage will have some materials
available. Two styles of mocca
sins will be shown.
March 12 and 19: "Finish
Your Projects."
This time will be for finish
ing projects, or if you have some
thing that was not shared, Cul
ture and Heritage will do their
best to share that information.
After these projects, and dur
ing the time spent together, Cul
ture and Heritage will be plan
ning for root digging trips, after
Root Feast.
