Smith offered
top job in BIA
While tribes across the United
States have been asked to rec
ommend individuals for the post
of Commissioner of Indian Af
fairs, Assistant Interior Secretary
Forrest Gerard has indicated he
already has someone in mind.
That person is the general
manager of the Confederated
Tribes, Ken Smith.
Officially approached by
Gerard in mid-November,
Smith said recently, "I'm still
raking a look at it at this point."
He expects to make a decision
sometime in the next three
weeks.

say yes or no," said Smith.
The position of Commis
sioner of Indian Affairs, which
has not been filled since Morris
Thompson left in the fall of
1976, is a political appointment
ranking just below Gerard in the
Indian bureaucracy. The com
missioner is responsible for the
daily operations of the BIA,
which employs 12,500 people
nationwide.
Budget uncertain

Paul Scott knows what he wants
and as Madras High student body
president, he'll work to get it.
"Mostly what I wanted to change
about this school is the way people
treat each other," he says. "I was try
ing to get through races and stereo
types."
When Paul sees a stranger at
school, he see's an opportunity - a
chance to learn something new about
somebody new.
But it's not all about other people.
He knows what he wants for himself
- he wants to see the world. He'd like
to start off with college when he fin
ishes high school. After that - look out
world, he's outa here!

In late September, Council

And in other news:
