Tribal Census is 52 percent complete After one and a Census housing unit plete, according to the tribal Vital Statistics office. This means, of all housing units in Warm Springs, 52 percent have completed a Cen sus questionnaire. In some housing households" (18-and over) have been inter viewed. Some reluctantly, as reported by one enumerator. She reported that after completing a ques tionnaire with one mom, the enumerator asked if there were any others 18-or over. There were, but when asked they said, "we don't want to do it." The mother told them, "Yes, you are going to. You need to do this for our people." The Census Team would like to thank this family and the rest of the 52 percent. We now are asking you for your contin ued assistance in reaching the rest of our community members. It will take community members coming forward, in order for us to successfully com plete the census. One way to ensure your family is counted is this Thanksgiving, make a list of all family members 18 and over and make a family plan to be sure each is interviewed by this Christmas. "Challenging the US. Census could mean thousands of dollars in additional appropria tions and grant funds, starting in 2005, and can amount to millions of dollars over the next five years," said Census Team member Jolene Atencio. "And it's not just about the money," said Atencio. "It's about the community working together, especially this next five years, to contribute what we each can." In order to meet the minimum count of 80 percent of housing units needed to sub mit a US. census challenge, the Census Team must interview 29 percent more homes. The target, due to budget restrictions, is to reach the 80 percent by the end of this 2003, said Atencio. If the team can secure additional funding to continue the project in 2004, the ultimate goal is to reach 100 percent of heads of households.
