E Coosb EEWA: The wy it is Page A Spilyay Tymoo October 17, 2002 Let's eep Veterans Powwow Bad things happen all too often in the world, so when something good happens we should be especially apprecia tive. The Veterans Powwow has grown in popu larity over the years, and has become one of the very good events on the reservation. Now, for the first time since this powwow began in 1989, the Warm Springs com munity most likely will not host the Veterans Powwow. The problem is money, as the tribes are facing another year of budget reductions. Nevertheless, it is not too late, as the powwow, before it was cancelled, was scheduled for November 8 and 9. If anyone has an idea about how to raise about $8,400 for the powwow, then please contact Leona Ike. Approach hunting as a sport By Sid Miller Spilyay Tymoo Hunting season is here and all the bucks are on the run all across the country. The report is that there is a good crop of deer this year, and the hunters should have a good year. There are some guys who look forward to the deer-hunting season all year long. It is a good sport, where a fellow can get out into the woods and roam the country side. Today with all the four wheel drive trucks and four wheel drive carts, it is easy for guys to hunt. It's not like the sport of the past, when a guy would walk long distances through the woods. This new way is like cheat ing on the poor animals, and that makes it not a sport at all, or maybe they are afraid they might get lost if they went afoot into the woods. Off reservation, it is a little different, as there are areas where vehicles are not permit ted, and when a hunter gets his game, he has to pack it out. That makes it a little more of a challenge for a hunter. Also gives the game animals a better chance. I've heard stories about people seeing huge herds of deer in certain places, but when I've gone there I never saw one at all. Someday maybe I'll see a big herd like some guys say they've seen. But maybe it's the "Bud" that doubles the size of the herds. A person said, "It must be hunting season, because there are a lot of Bud and Coors cans all along the roads." Reports are that there are a lot of bucks on Dog Butte, and on Lul-e Kush Butte. Spilyay Speaks Fire fighters, medics On behalf of Warm Springs Fire and Safety, wc, the fire medics, are asking the Hello, Pastor community of Warm Springs to help our department. They have brought many changes. One of these changes is the transfer of ownership of my StudioGallery on Alberta Street. The change will happen at the end of September. Jim and Teresa Jackson will be the new owners, working as a team to run the gallery. The gallery will currently retain its name, the Lillian Pitt Studio Gallery, and its location. I know you will welcome Jim and Teresa into the community, and support their endeavors to provide high quality exhibit space for Native American artists in the Portland area. Jim's bronze and clay sculp ture will be a prominent addi tion to the gallery, as well as sev eral other Native artists from the Northwest and around the country. The change will allow me much needed time to focus on the things that are most impor tant to me: my art making and the need to nurture and take care of myself. Recent health issues have made me rethink my pri orities and demand I slow down a bit and reset the rhythm of my life. Many exciting things are hap pening as I pass the torch on to Jim and Teresa. I will continue to have my work in their gallery and look forward to a fruitful relationship with them. My work can also be found at: An tique Gallery, , Anchorage, Alaska; Four Winds Gallery,' Pittsburgh, Penn.; The Images of the North Gallery, San Fran cisco; Jeffrey Moose Gallery, Seattle; Pendleton Home Store, Portland, and the Museum at Warm Springs. Private showings of my work will be possible. The number to call to set up an appointment is (503) 528-1155. My work can be viewed at my web-site www.lillianpitt.com. Please look for an exclusive opportunity to buy my bronzes and jewelry at this site in No vember. Also please join me as we celebrate the Grande Re Opening at the Lillian Pitt Stu dioGallery on Oct. 25, 5-9 p.m. This reception will feature my work, along with Jim Jackson's new bronzes. I want to thank those of you who have followed my career and believed in me from the beginning as well as those of you who have joined my family along the way. Your support has been essential and life sustain ing. I am deeply moved and in spired by all of you and hope you will continue to be in touch with the spirit that moves me. Sincerely, Lillian Pitt A thank-you To our family and friends, We want to send our thanks and appreciation out to the drummers, Shakers, the people who brought food out to the prayer services, the people who were present at the funeral, your cring an area of hun dreds of square miles. Each area has people and houses scattered over a wide from Rick area. The Agency station cov ers the bulk of the population of Warm Springs. That means medical house calls, medical jail calls, medical motor vehicle ac cidents, medical calls at Kah-Nce-Ta, High Lookec Lodge, Letters to the presence was very comforting to our hearts. To the people who stopped by our home to see us and give us comfort, it was ap preciated. Keep us in your prayers, as we will keep you in ours. May the Lord bless all our people. Sincerely, Marilyn and all her kids. In memory To Riggs Charley and family, I am sincerely hurt and sad dened by the passing of Wanda "Wanaxani" Charley. My heart goes out to her family and friends. I feel really bad because I couldn't be there, not only for her family but to also help out at the Longhouse. I just heard recently of her passing. I can't believe it. She was such a won derful lady, who could not only fish, but she was talented in many ways. She could mechanic, bead, dig roots, hunt, plus she could cook up a storm. I've often thought about her and the family. As you know, I've been in prison for almost five years now, but I have kept in contact with Wanda, and had planned on coming to see her and her family upon my release on Nov. 18. I'm coming over on a whole new outlook and I'm going to go down river to pay my respects to Wanda. I do love her and will miss her very, very much. She'll always have a piece of my heart. God bless to the family, and feel free to write me, Lily, Leslie, Merda, Robert, Keith, Shamona, Bonnie, Riggs, my heart goes out to you all. I love you all. And tell Shamona to stay strong. An apology To the Editor: I, Douglas Williams, would like to apologize to Elissa Stevens, an employee of the Deschutes Crossing Restaurant. I am sincerely sorry for my ac tion that may have caused you any embarrassment or discom fort. Please accept my apology for my wrong-doing. Sincerely, Douglas Will iams Sr. Our youth I think we are failing our chil dren. We are too caught up in the white man's world of money, money, money by any means. Even to the extent of selling out our children, youth, future. We are all responsible for our children who are choosing the option of death. Death never used to be considerd an option a few short years ago. Don't you wonder why our children are killing each other, killing them selves, choosing death instead of living in our home, the Warm Springs Rez. All these millions we arc wast ing on this feasibility gaming study is literally killing our people. Teen center, youth res taurant, top of the line play ground for the kids, invest all these millions into our children, and we will see our investment deserve community and walk-ins at the station after I IIS clinic hours. Also, fire calls: grass fires, alarms, car fires, house fires, etc.: stuck fingers in bikes, beads in the nose, rescue calls for motor vehicle accidents. You sec the list can continue with things that the firemedics do for you. If you sec where I am going, our problem is time, distance and people. When the station blossom in five, 10, 20 years... plant seeds in our children's hearts, minds, souls. Show that we care, love them more than money. I might be wrong but I think it is who you are, not what you have. I don't need a middleman to pray to our Creator. Do you believe our lawyers. I don't. They make their millions win, lose, draw. As long as they keep our Warm Springs people in litigation these itinerate self ish lawyers and their sell-out so called leaders following them around like lost puppies, pick ing up all the blood money they can. Why don't you try living on nothing. You are creating drug dealers, murders, suicides, pain, sorrow, tears, death. Our kids like new shoes too. It doesn't take much to make little skins happy and we, all of us, can't even do that. More money, money, money. Get out of the way, kid. More money! Who says we need lots of1 money to be happy, to be a good American. I admit money is a necessary evil in today's society, but we need not listen to a den of thieves and lawyers who ad vise our so-called leaders to con tinue to throw all our limited resources into a pie in the sky feasibility gambling study. Invest these millions into our children here in Warm Springs, and in time our actions will pay dividends, just as our actions today are paying dividends of pain, tears, sorrow, hopelessness, so that death becomes an op tion. EEE Took T Wigwa, Bobby Eagleheart. Sorry To the Warm Springs Tribal Court, Prosecutors Office and Corrections Officers Peter Brunoe and Chris Jack. I apologize for my actions on Aug. 9 against officers Brunoe and Jack for the assaults, and to Tribal Court Judge Langnese and Tribal Prosecutor Toni Made on Aug. 12. My deepest apology for my inappropriateness. Signed, Joseph Craig No powwow The Veterans Day Powwow Committee regrets to announce that the 2002 Veterans Day Pow wow scheduled for Nov. 8 and 9 has been cancelled due to bud get reductions by the tribes. We would like to thank those who supported and sponsored the powwow event over the years including enterprises of the Confederated Tribes, Tribal Council, drummers and pow wow floor staff. Leona Ike. Enrollment Dear friends, I am writing in regard to my daughter Ramona and her en rollment in the Confederated Tribes. I am grateful to the Tribal Council for her accep tance. I told my daughter, you may not get as much, not like your cousins. She told me it re ally didn't matter, she just wanted to be a tribal member, and now staff is out on a call, the call and transport to Madras can take up to two hours to com plete. The next call during this two hour time has to be covered by volunteers, off-duty medics, or staff from Madras. Usually, the staff from Simnasho will come down to the Agency. Now for a short time, the two staff mem bers arc covering the entire res Editor Appreciative Hello, greetings my people, tribal members. I am writing to thank the Tribal Council for accept ing me for enrollment. Be ing a tribal member means a great deal to me and my family. I could not do this with out the help and support of my family. This means so much to me, more than you know. From this day forth I will always represent my people in a good way. Thank you for your time. Ramona Marie Stacona she is. Ramona has represented the people of Warm Springs very well. She always introduces her self and her tribe, being Warm Springs. We have traveled all over the U.S. and Canada, be cause powwow is a way of life for my family. I took Ramona to the Con necticut Schemitzun powwow. She led in the Grand Entry with the royalty, and introduced her self, her crown, and her tribe. Not only did she say she was from Warm Springs, but she got fifth in her category. The master of ceremonies said she represented the Pacific Northwest all the way from Warm Springs, Ramona Marie Stacona. That was cool, but it's like that all over, and that won't change. Why? Because it's time to lead and guide our children in a better way, tribal member or not, the children are our fu ture. Thank you for you time. God bless.
