Spilyay Tymoo, Warm Springs, Oregon April 4, 2002 Page 7 Celilo hosting powwow, salmon feast The Celilo Wy-am Salmon Feast and Powwow will happen Friday through Sunday, April 12-14. Friday morning will be rejoining ceremonies, memorials and name giv ing. Sunday morning at 10 o'clock is Washut service. Salmon feast is Sun day at noon. Grand Entries are 8 p.m. on Friday; 1 and 7 p.m. on Sunday. Dance divisions are Adult (ages 18- 49), Senior (50 and over), Teen (13 17) and Junior (7-12). Categories are Men's Traditional, Fancy and Grass; Women's Tradi tional, Fancy and Jingle; Men's Golden Age, and Women's Golden Age. Teen boys' Traditional, Fancy and Grass; Teen girls' Traditional, Fancy and Jingle. Junior boys' Mixed (traditional, fancy and grass), and Jun ior girls' Mixed (traditional, fancy and jingle. The Tiny Tots category (6 years of age and under) is paid daily. Master of ceremonies for the event will be Thomas Morning Owl. Forum focuses on problem of gangs Warm Springs will be hosting a gang awareness and prevention forum on Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13. The event begins Friday morning from 8 to 9 o'clock, with registration at the Agency Longhouse. At 9:30 a.m. will be the invocation by Peggy Williams, followed by in troductions by Char Herkshan. Guest speakers Waunetta Lonewolf, Kevin Cox and Wali Murray will then make presentations. Friday workshops are from 10:45 a.m. till 3 p.m., with a break for lunch.. Closing prayer for the day is at 4 p.m. Forum participants will then visit inmates at the Warm Springs Jail for discussion of gang prevention and awareness. The schedule on Saturday, April 13, will be the same as on Friday, with the exception that no visit is sched uled on Saturday at the jail. For more information, contact Char Herkshan at 553-3205. During the two-day forum, the workshop topics will include the fol lowing: History of gangs in the U.S.; In dian gangs; tagger wars; gangs in sports, and female gangs. Another workshop topic will be developing community-based gang prevention and intervention cam paigns and strategies. Herkshan commented that the problem of gangs on the reservation and among young tribal members is a very serious and disturbing one. Her hope is that the upcoming workshop will provide information on how to address this problem in the future. Healing Circle 2002 gathering at HeHe The HeHe Longhouse will be the site of the 2002 Honoring of the Sa cred Healing Circle, April 19-21. This is an event for veterans and their families, though others are wel come as well. The opening ceremonies, lighting of the healing fire, blessing and honor song, are scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Friday, April 19. All drums are in vited. Master of ceremonies will Bill Wheeler, who will give the introduc tion. This will be followed by a talk by Foster Kalama, who coordinates this event. Pete Simoneau will talk on treat ment availability for veterans. He will speak again on Saturday, at 9:15 a.m., followed by a talk by Sam King, among other activities. There will be a mini powwow be ginning at 7 p.m. A clown dance con test will also be held, with prizes awarded. Closing ceremonies will be Sunday at 10 a.m. No fees of any kind are being charged. Contributions and dona tions of raffle items and food will be greatly appreciated. This is an alco hol and drug free event. Menu will include buffalo meat, salmon, deer and or elk and trout.
