Fancy shawl dancer Donnetta Squiemphen, Indian name Backward Dancing Woman, appeared last year on the PBS Television special Mu sicFromaPaintedCave. The show may be re-broadcast next month on PBS, so if you missed it the first time there should be another chance to see the program. Music From a Painted Cave, by Native American flautist and composer Robert Mirabal, aired on PBS last year to great acclaim. Later in 2001, Mirabal, of Taos heritage, went on to win three Native American Music Awards: Songwriter of the Year, Record of the Year, and Artist of the Year. During a two-week period last year, local tribal member Squiemphen participated with Mirabal and other Native American artists in perfor mances aiMusicFrom aPainted Cave. The group performed nightly for two weeks at the Pequot Tribes' Foxwood Re sort and Casino in Connecti cut. The final two nights of the performance were recorded on film, and broadcast on PBS. Mirabal recruited Squiemphen to be a part of the show.
