Most of our people live in poverty, G.A., welfare, food stamps, etc. . . . The number of social ills is way too many. Our kids are killing each other, killing themselves, etc. , , , , I think a lot of our sickness is directly linked to lack of jobs. Our people need jobs ... we are being economically lynched. Most of our resources are being funneled into Madras and other communities while our own community continues to wade through our people's blood. . Disneyland!! You know the amusement parks in California and Florida. - jrr -s:' ; a. - . - - . WARM SPRINGS LANDH I-ct's cre ate an amusement park up by I Irl le Butte or some place up on the flats along the highway. This Warm Springs amusement park would create jobs and it would be clean money as opposed to gambling be cause gambling hurts more families, cre ates dissension, divides our people. ... I voted against our gambling casino and spoke out against it because it is inher ently evil ... it harms too many of our people and others for the sake of greed. To me gambling is like the Trojan horse or those smallpox infested blankets that those sick people gave our Indian people back in the 1700s and 18(K)s. These blan kets kept our people warm and KIIJ.FD Tl 1F.M. These smallpox infested blankets kept our people warm but these same blankets killed our people off by the mil lions. ... I think gambling and greed are much like these smallpox blankets. Ixok at how much harm gambling has already done to our people, community and our leaders are still spending millions trying to force us into following diem off a cliff ... Kalija Uncle Tomahawk synthetic In dian better start thinking a generation ahead instead of always thinking about their selfishness, dog-eat-dog, every man for themselves rat race mentality. F.vcn if you win the race you're still a rate. ... It's WE NOT ME. I hope our Tribal Council will give this idea some serious thought because I think it would work. ... Imagine a little tour train (like at the Portland Zoo) giving grandma, grandpa and the grandkids a scenic ride and then a band of bloodthirsty savages attack the train!! Tell me these kids wouldn't remember that, then when they grow up and have kids of their own they'll bring their grandkids to Warm Springs Indian Land. ... Just an idea, we have all the resources. God Bless You. Bobby Eaglcheart Letter of encouragement I am writing this letter to anyone that needs some encouragement, with hopes that it will help you. I've recently made some big changes in my life and I'd like to share some of the things that I have learned. So many times I didn't want to attend 'any refigi6u"s activity?' because df'orit or two people that I thought were phony or hypocritical. Yes, there are some whose hearts are not right with God and they do mislead many people, but not everyone is this way. I didn't realize that my own thoughts were my biggest enemy. I am learning to take my focus off of people and put it where it belongs ... on God. As long .4.;. ::4?4? it O L A XI r - j -a t j j . . -. " 1 as I keep trying la gain the approval of other. I'll be let down. So many times I beat myself up for fail ure. W hat little pride 1 had left kept me from seeking help. But, it took the an swered prayers of a child to change my ways. Pride is destructive and will keep you from receiving the blessings that you deserve. Many people believe that alcohol and drugs arc the main weapons used to de stroy our people. I think it might be the love of money. Think about it. ... Did you know that all sin is eiiial in God's eyes? Yes ... even gambling, gossiping, dishon esty, cheating and ... there is no one with out sin. So don't be so hard on yourself or others. One of my favorite verses is John 8:7 "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone." If you feel defeated by harsh words spoken to you, remember ... you don't need their ap proval. Don't tjuit ... keep trying ... even if you make a mistake or fall along the way. Quitting is what the enemy wants you to do, and he will use people (even family and friends) and situations (debts, relapse, failure) to discourage you. Keep your eyes on God, and He will begin to change you to the person that He wants you to be. It will take time, so be patient. Pray for Godly teachers. I hope that this letter has given someone some encouragement.. God Bless You, v Sarah J. Frank ;-. Practical casino plan? aw mi. iuiu;i I agree with the Spilyay Tymoo edito rial, "Casino proponents should consider Highway 26 site.',' The gaming task force is commended for having a vision, but how practical and costly is it this time around? . ' T According to a report we received at the Simnasho District Meeting a couple of years ago, the group admitted to spending J 1.5 million for the preliminary study for a casino at Madras-yct the tribal member ship voted it down! There's a lot of, second-guessing by this group that is costing our tribe million$$$ Havtl?cTfilfcs' pffrcflasl-cT cWjff land at Hood River for the casino ameni tics such as the parking lot? Now that ev eryone knows that the purpose of the land is for a casino, the price for adjoining land will double or triple. The information that I have on the land is that it is still par tially owned by jnon-tribal members. The $50 million or so that the consult ants and tribal attorney came up with as the budget for a Hood River Casino will probably double or triple. My experience with a massive expansion of a casino in Minnesota and the construction of our casino at Kah-Nec-Ta' is that the costs could promptly increase for a number of reasons, I have seen the Hood River location and the construction will be at consider able cost on that IrilhidA Idealist. (Webster's Unabridged Die tionary) A person who represents things as they might be or should be rather than they arc. I hope the Tribal Council will consider appointing "Realists" on the tribal gam ing task force, allowing a new voice on this communications with the stockholders We shouldn't have to find out what is go ing on along with the general public. There are presumptuous announce ments in The Orcgonian newspaper with little or no consideration given to the pri oritics of the tribal membership. The gam ing task force decisions need to be based on the priorities of the tribal membership, I'd like to remind the Tribal Council and tribal gaming task force that we built the casino at Kah-Nec-Ta with the option to turn it into a convention center if the tribal membership chose to do so. Please consider a tribal member survey for the casino interprise location(s) Nyl Na-K'ishayat (Aurolyn Stwyer Watlamet) . i t Rebirth of Guster Hello my people: I am writing this in regards to our sov ereignty, which is being battled by our own people in the parole and probation and corrections departments. I see a rebirth of Custer in the system, which is taking it in their own hands to give tribal members over to the state who has no jurisdiction 'over people when on tribal land. ' I don't recall selling our land and rec ognition as a tribe. Well if you don't know these are the Sortie type of people that invaded our land. took it, broke our treaties" and slaughtered thousands of men, women and children for their own benefit and gratification. Now they want what little land we've got left and our own people are selling us OUt. '!(!!( !'. That was a "Cowardly Act," by any mcam Cowardly and Sneaky, is and action by terrorists who use anything to their ad vantage to do harm and destruction in their cause. It was a real shock to the whole nation what they did and it angered the Ameri can people and made them realize that we should always be on our toes on aggres sion such as this. Nothing like this has happened since Pearl Harbor, when the US. was attacked by Japan. Even during the World War, we should have been a little expectant of something to happen. As the nation was awakened with the terrorist action, the American people were brought together and were ready to back anything against the terrorists. Here in Warm Springs, Tribal members and veterans gathered at the Agency Longhouse to honor all the young men and women who are now entering the Armed Forces and those who have re cently enlisted and are presently serving around the country. There was a prayer service for all the families and sons and daughters who are serving or preparing to enter the Armed Forces.
