Spilyay Tymoo, Wqrrn Springs, Oregon August 9, 2001 Determined student earns MHS diploma Bj Jerrj BmHoi As freshman David White, now 18, was on his way to becoming one of the many dropouts Madras High School produces. I le said his grades were, "Not good," and he laughed, "I probably had a point-something CPA." Then things changed - he wanted to graduate. And he did, as part of the largest graduating class of MI IS, 140 students, lie said of his gradua tion, "I was told to graduate. That was my way of repaying my mom back." After his freshman and sopho more years White attended summer school to be academically eligible for the football season and more impor tantly, to stay on-track for gradua- as I was concerned." tion. Bruce Recce, White's former PK teacher and former football coach, said he was a hard worker and coach-able. Recce also said he was a good student, "I ic was a very diligent worker, always did what you asked him to do. Just your typical perfect student, as far niors the team traveled to Australia play against other all-state teams and after that they went to Hawaii for relaxation. White enjoyed the trip but had one complaint, "It shouldn't have been so hot." Over the past year White has been involved in many fundraising activities for a graduation trip with 10 other Native American seniors to Disneyland and other theme parks in California. White said he enjoyed going to Disneyland the most, "Be cause of the rides, it's the happiest place on earth." Next fall White will attend The College of the Redwoods in F.ureka, California but is unsure of a major. I le says he wants, "to get away from Oregon - from home - for a while." I Ic plans on playing football at the junior college as a receiver and hopes he'll go on to a four-year college. After college he plans on going to a vocational school to become a cabinetmaker, which is his goal in life. v h v . S') S -r-- v "Kids on Wheels" teaches children bicycle safety.
