Fire & Safety seeks EMS
firefighters for training
We are seeking to recruit Tribal
Members who are interested in a ca
reer in the Fire 1 Emergency Medical
Services field. Are you up for a chal
lenge? If you are a Tribal Member
looking a career direction, career
change, or maybe you're fresh out
of school, please consider the excit
ing, challenging field of being a
structure FircfighterIiMT. To break
into this field, it requires a lot of
work physically, mentally, and aca
demically. In order to work at F'ire
& Safety as an entry level
l irefighterIvMT, the job requires
the following certifications: EMT
Basic and Firefighter-Basic. Indian
country doesn't have its own F.MT
certification program, so the F.MT
classes are generally taken through a
local sponsoring fire department or
at COCC. Community members
often wonder why F.MT certifica
tion is a prerequisite to the job, but
if it were your family memberloved
one who was sick or injured, you
would want an F.MT or Paramedic
to respond as they have the medical
training. The basic firefighter train
ingcertification can be done at the
weekend Fire Academy which is also
put on by sponsoring fire depart
ments, often in Central Oregon. So,
are you up for the challenge? If you

arc, there arc several ways an inter
ested Tribal Member could go about
it:
1) Get accepted into an ap
prenticeship program (requires a
GF.D or High School Diploma): or
2) Work with Higher Fduca
tion to get set up for a college Fire
ScienceF.MS program; or
3) Become an active volunteer
at Fire & Safety. After demonstrat
ing your commitment and interest
in pursuing a career in the F'ircF.MS
field, the department can also help
you with the required trainings that
will lead to certification. A very
dedicated individual could complete
an F1MT classcertification and Fire
Academycertification within six
months. (
We really need and want Tribal
Members to pursue a career in the
FireEMS field and become em
ployed at Fire & Safety. To date, we
have had very little interest from
Tribal Members in pursuing this as
a career. If you have given serious
consideration to being a career
Firefighter EMT, and are willing to
invest the time, effort, and commit
ment the work requires, we need
you. Please contact Cfiicf Dan
Martinez at Fire & Safety, 553-1634.

wiu to improve the preservation of the
twelve-year-old Memorial. A
tregthencd drainage system wan in-tallt-d

problems that had occurred in the past,
The old compredded-gravel walkway
has also been replaced by concrete pav
ing stones to grratly improve accessibil

The cost of the project was $2')(I,(KH).
To date, $286,000 has been raised
through contributions by major corpo

zens, Vietnam Veterans of Oregon Me
morial Fund (VVOM1) President Jerry
Pcro recently stated, "Although the
work is done and the Memorial is in
beautiful shape, we still owe the
construstor $4,000, AOTKM Construc
tion Incorporated, an Oregon firm, did
not charge for their services and, in fact,
made a generous cash donation to the
project. VX'e do not want to let them
down."
The Vietnam Veterans of Oregon
Memorial is located next to the Oregon
Zoo and World Forestry Center in
Portland's Washington Park. The "Liv
ing Memorial" recognizes approxi
mately 80-0 Oregonians who arc listed
as killed or missing-in-actin as a direct
result of the Vietnam conflict. It is also
