4 January 11,2001 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo E Coosh EEWA: The way it is During the annual holiday basketball tour nament here in Warm Springs, there was a lot of questions asked of, "What's happened to a once popular holiday basketball tournament?" At one time it used to be selective to see who would participate in the annual tournament, as teams from far and near would be trying to get into the tourney bracket. Teams came from the mid-west, south west, California, Washington, Idaho, Montana and various points in Oregon. It was a worth while tournament where various teams were participating and all the teams had nice uniforms making it more presentable. There were some real good championship games between good teams. It was good to see teams playing with good sets of uniforms that gives it more respect for the game. How would you like to go down to the Rose Gar den and see all the players in dirty shorts and T Shirt's. Each one trying to our do the other guy with the ugliest set of playing gear like they do around here. Well, don't know what it is, maybe some guys are not as good a players as they should be and the only way they can get noticed is to dress the ugliest gear they can find. ' Many years ago here in Warm Springs, there used to be a league with established teams. Teams made up of personnel from different departments and groups. All the games were scheduled and standings were kept, and at the end of the season a traveling trophy would be presented to the team with the best record of the year. All the teams in the league had nice uniforms which made it even more like a league. There were teams like, The Roads Department, The Administra tion, Forestry, Simnasho, and The Cowboy's. All the games were played like regular games, where subs had to check in at the score table and enter the game as permitted by the officials. There were a lot of spectators that showed up for the games. Well, back to the annual holiday tournament, today there are teams listed from different parts of the country and at tournament time most of the players don't show up and they all sign up local players to play. That takes all the life out of the tournament and makes it more like an IBA night, unpleasant and dull to watch. All coaches, manages, players ask, "What's hap pened to a once a nice tournament?" All the teams that enter a tournament should be able to floor a full team and every team should have complete uniforms while on the floor. In the future for the annual holiday tournament all the teams should submit a complete list of their player's and a photo for the program, and guarantee their team will be here. If a team fails to do so they should forefeet the game and be disqualified from further play in the tournament. It really is boring to see all locals playing against each other which are supposed to be teams from other parts of the country. Get the tournament back to what it used to be, a great holiday tournament. AHH-NAH-CHI-TOON! ! ! Toe Ness This guy told his friend; "I finally got rid of that nagging headache I woke up with every morn ing. I moved to the guest room." All God is the only way to change your life To the editor, I Samuel 22: 1 , 2-David therefore departed tlience and escaped to the cave A-ltil-lnm: and when his bretliren and all his father's house heard it, they went down thither to him And every one that was in distrew. and ever one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a enptnin over them: and there were with him about four hundred men. This letter is in regard to our cur rent situation, jobs, unemployment, WSFPI, Construction, etc., the church world. Back in 1988 (?) we had a strike at WSFPI, there was meetings then about job trainings, job placement elsewhere, welfare, college, school education, etc., sounded good then, sounds good now but. . . the only ones who have jobs then and now are the ones talking. David is a type of Christ David means loving, well beloved. God wants you to know that He loves you and you are well beloved, He says He cares for you and He will never leave thee, nor for sake thee. David was on the run for his life King Saul was trying to kill him be cause he was jealous ofhSm. It says David escaped to the cave A dul lam which means refuge. If I had known what I know now back in 1988, or when I re tired in 1 99 1 from WSFPI, how much of a reftige Jesus really is, maybe a very good friend of mine wouldn't have committed suicide after he was laid off. Psalms 9:9 says, "The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a ref uge in times of trouble." Ps 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Ps 62:7,8 In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge is in God. Trust in him at all times; Ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us Selah, Ps 142:4, 5 I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but mere was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul. I cried unto thee, o Lord: I said, thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living. It says everyone that was in dis-; tress. Distress here means a narrow place, confinement or disability, anguish, strait ness. I don't know what religion you are. But if you don't have one, I know Jesus (Saviour) for 1 8 years has kept me alco hol and drug free, out of jail, out of prison. Thanks to all that helped with my name giving To the editor, On the day of January 1, 2001, 1 received my Indian name Maxaiki at the Simnasho Longhouse. The lady who thought of my name is my great grandmother Nettie Showaway. She is the oldest member of the Warm Springs tribe and is about 100 years old! She lived at Parker, Washington for many years and I think everybody knows Nettie. The man who helped with the ceremony is my uncle Quiltman, Milton Sahme, (he is backup singer for John Trudell). Be fore we started the ceremony there was seven Washut songs. My grand mother Neda Wesley and mom that is my stepmother Aurolyn Watlamet saved and prepared things for the giveaway for the last two years. These things were laid out on a trail in the Longhouse. I wore a fully beaded vest, chaps, moccasins, and ribbon shirt that were later given away. My uncle Davis Stwyer made several necklaces and my little brother Jonathan and I helped string neck laces. Quiltman and me danced up and down the Simnasho Longhouse around the trail of giveaway items and my dad Rick and Aurolyn and lots of relatives danced behind us. Grandma Liza Brown was happy. Oh, she brought a big tule mat that held special things for the give away like huckleberries, roots, dried elk and elk sausage from my dad, and Please write To all my family & friends, This is Albert A. Stahi, I would like to hear from you one & all. I am doing well. You can reach me at: Sunnyside Care Center; co Albert A. Stahi; 45 15 Sunnyside Rd., S.E.; Sa lem, OR 97302 letters, preferably 300 words In Acts 2:43-47 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. And all tliat believed were together, and had all tilings common: and sold their posses sions and goods, and parted then to all men, as every man had need. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness ofheart. Praising God, and having favor with all people, and the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. It says everyone that was in debt Debt means to lend on interest; exact, giver of sury ; through the idea of imposi tion. Hard times, debt. JEHOVAH JIREH (the Lord will provide). It says and everyone that was discontented. Discon tented means bitter of soul, bitter, bitter ness or bitterly, angry, chafed, great, heavy, On 1 997 Warm Springs missed out on 64 new HUD homes, these funds went to Arizona. There is an old saying from 1 964 "Hire Indians, hire our people, train them to be carpenters, but don't let them build our houses." I don't know what fu ture there is in construction, maybe all the Indian carpenters, workers etc. will be out of work, because Fuqua Homes, instead of HUD stick built homes. I don't know about you and your current church or re ligion. God says in Joshua 24: 1 5 "Choose you this day whom you will serve; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." Sometimes it may fee you are run ning for your life as David did. I mean your spiritual life. You may feel like David, as he was getting put down about his testimony, singing, praying, preach ing, you may feel as David, hurt and wounded spiritually, because the church had become a compromising harlot,' mavhe thfv ramp i inHer n ile under a man and not God, the church changed, no godly anointed music as it was replaced by music from other gods, just like today you walk in a church, its Like going to a rock concert or rap concert or country western concert. You may feel like David as Saul took over the sacrifice and prayers, not being feed the truth about God's word, slowly dying a spiritual death, because preachers today can't preach "thus saith the Lord" anymore, because some have rejected Christ Jesus coming in the flesh, the cross, the blood, the virgin birth, the trinity and Jesus coming back again, not may other things for men, too. Quiltman said a lot of native words about my name. He told the people about me. That I am 13 years old. I am a hunter and fisherman, I dance at powwows and I go to the Wapato Longhouse. My name is an old name of a great, great grandfather who is bur ied at Red Lake. Quiltman gave me my name and w had a big giveaway. We gave away all the things that I wore, six beaded bags, eight Pendleton blankets, dozens of shawls, buckskin, money and other things. When family members receive their gifts, they game things like beadwork and money and spoke to me about how they are related to me and what it means to receive an Indian name and that I should practice saying my name. When grandma Nettie spoke I didn't understand what she was say ing, but I know it was very kind and loving words because everyone hugged her and I did too. I'll ask grandma Neda what she said. My dad and mom gave me a green beaded vest, the chief of the Warm Springs tribe, Delvis Heath gave me a hun dred dollars. Uncle Gene Sampson is giving me a bustle to dance with. Grandma Carrie Schuster told me that I could choose a coat from her store in Toppenish that is the Inter-Tribal Sports. My uncle Captain Moody pre sented me with an eagle fan. He en- I apn elated I ii thridv tc Ir. l(kor f otrmlMT IS Him trip staff at II t preaching against sin, lell is hot and eter nal or the wrath to come. Its I m okay, you're okay, heaven on earth today, who ever has the most toys when he dies wins, new homes, new cars, new everything! You may feel as you have to run as David did because of the ravening wolves behind the pulpits. Ones who lie for money, greed, lust, backslidden who are prideful, who are to kill, scatter and destroy the sheep, as Saul was after David. As God departed from Saul, so is God starting to depart from some churches unless we come back to God the Father, God die Son and God the Holy Ghost Saul because of his jealousy had no dis cernment, as in consulting the witch of Endor, even so it is today, holistic, new age, animistic people seeking other gods, compromising their souls saying we all serve the same God. Because of no discernment we have spiritual abortion in churches, mur der, anybody getting up behind the pul pit to bash, put down, throwing javelins as Saul done to David. Because of Saul's rebellion, 1 Samuel 15:23 for rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou has rejected the word of the Lord, you may feel you have to run to Addulam, because of hatred, jealousy, petty gossip, and backbiting. Does gambling make you careless? My aunt Hot Dog Greene came all the way from Nevada and she made a beaded bag and necklaces for the giveaway and my grandma Delores George and Carrie Schuster came from Washington and another grandma Darlou and her husband came from Portland. After the giveaway, we all ate. We ate salmon, roots, potatoes, veggies, ham, fruit, salads, fry bread, wild rice, berries luckamean and elk meat that my dad provided. Grandma Shirley Heath was the head cook along with help from Lucinda Heath, Rosa Bill, grandma Geraldine Blodgett and other aunts and cousins. I can't remember all the names, again there were prayer songs that started and ended the meal. The Washut drummers included Delvis Heath, Big Rat Suppah, Gene Sampson, Captain Moody, Guy Wallulatum, and Fred Wallulatum had the bell. After the ceremony we went and delivered a beaded bag and Pendleton shawl to my grandmother Louise Hellon and then back to Washington where we will deliver some things for our fam ily at the Wapato Longhouse. I want to thank those who helped make this day special and I tried not to leave anyone out.
