On August 5,2000, the Blackhawks participated in a men's tournament at Lincoln City, Oregon. The Blackhawks came away with the tournament championship, they won by scores of 78 72 over Lincoln City, won over The Drifters by a score of 1 05 - 60, and in a championship game rematch, won over Lincoln City by a score of 1 13 - 84. With the win in this tournament the Blackhawks increased their chances to participate in the State Games of America in St. Louis, Mis souri in August 2001. Players who participated in this tournament were; Cody Eckman, Casey Kinney, James " Buck " Scott, Dave, Josh Hall, and Ammon Bemis, other team members who couldn't make it were Nate Block and Chris Lowery. The Blackhawks are coached by Sam Kentura, and he adds that he feels the Blackhawks are one of the best teams in the state, they have good team speed and good heighth. Blackhawks will look for ward to the coming basketball season with high hopes and incentive to go to the State Games of America. Fall sports preparation begins Fall sports at Madras High School will begin with an informational parentplayer meeting August 15, 2000 at 7 p.m. in the gym. A general session will be held to discuss changes to the athletic policy and then break out sessions for each fall sport will follow. All students and their parents are encouraged to attend. No player may practice until all the necessary paper work has been completed. All paper work will be available at the meeting and anyone not having a vilid physical may obtain one that night for no fee. Practices for volleyball, cross country, cheerleading, soccer, and football begin Monday August 21st. Practice times will be announced at the August 15th meeting. Walker is a Sunset High School and Oregon State University gradu ate whose resume includes nine years as Sports Information Director at the University of Portland. While at UP he received national recognition for writing and sports brochures, includ ing four consecutive "Best in the Na tion" awards from the College Sports Information Directors 01 America. Snorts Information Director Prior to his tenure at UP he was in volved with a variety of radio stations covering Oregon high school activi ties, Oregon college sports and the Portland Trail Blazers. Walker, w ho joined the staff on July 17, say's "I am ex tremely excited about becoming in volved with Oregon high school ath- OSAA Executive Director Wes Ediger comments, "We are fortunate to bring a person with Steve's quali fications to our staff. His experience as a college SID will be a great asset to our 278 member schools. In addi tion to that, his familiarity with Or egon high schools, the media, and event management in general w ill be a plus for the OSAA. I am confident that he will be outstanding in his job and contribute to the staff in many positive w ays."
