First of all, I'd like to apologize to the Greene family for not being able to attend the funeral to pay my re spects. I don't know what gives the court system the right to approve or dis approve a man the right to attend and pay respect to the family at a funeral of a well respected elder in our community. I think that the people of our res ervation need to take a close look at the court and judicial system in the correctional facility. Bad enough I'm in jail because of a man coming to my house causing problems. On several occasions was asked to leave and stay away. Then, got beat down when he wouldn' t stay away. I ended up getting the raw deal out of it with several months incarcera tion for protecting myself and my property. The man should have never got out of his car trying to be all macho. Most positions require working Greene family Another topic is my employment. How can a man make a respectful living working hard to better his life when the correctional facility cut me off cold? Since I've started working I've never missed a day of work that wasn't excused until I ended up in this place. I've never so much as called in sick or miss work on acount of a funeral and I was late a couple of times since I started working over a year ago and those were only by a few minutes. Its depressing knowing that I'm controlled by the judicial system again. After straightening my life out. In a few more days it'll be twenty four months since I quit drinking. Isn't the Tribe suppose to be en couraging employment rather than cutting them down cold? I can un derstand it if I was still living my old lifestyle. But I'm still striving to better my life. . To Come In Next Issue The Department of Defense Form (DD 214, Discharge from the Armed Forces) is the "Key" document in establishing Veterans Benefits, En titlements and Services. The docu ment must be presented when apply ing for Veterans related services with the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA), Medical Center, Regional Office, Nursing Care or internment in National Cemeteries. It is essential that all our Mem bers, Spouses, Dependent Children as well as all Veterans have knowl edge of where this document is maintained, stored or kept for safe keeping. In the even the Veteran or Family member has a need to apply for a VA BenefitMedical Care or Burial entitlement, the Discharge Documentation becomes an abso lute necessity. The DD 214 or the Discharge Document is the only proof of Mili tary Service accepted by the DVA. World War II Veterans (or earlier tenures of service) possibly were is sued a "Discharge Certificate" and or a "Statement of Service". This is acceptable, if in Original or Certified form. After World War II, the DD2 1 4 was predominantly used in conjunc tion with the discharge from Active Military Duty. , f Qualified "Merchant Mariners" must also obtain this verification of service to qualify for DVA benefits and entitlements. This as with all "Vital Documents" can be placed on file with your "County Registrar" at no cost for the purpose of access and a mater of Official Record. It is recommended, Veterans take this action to ensure the Discharge Certificate is protected and available when needed. Should you not have "Discharge Documentation", it is possible to obtain copies from the applicable Department of Defense Service the Veteran was affiliated with. Submis sion of Standard Form (SF 180) to the appropriate Service Department of the National Personnel Records Center can be initiated by your De- partment Service Officer, For information and service, con tact your American Legion Depart ment Service Officer. 503-326-26 16 or by FAX 503-326-2618. 5 Annual Art contest open for 17 years and under Arts and Kids is pleased to announce that $38,000 in prizes and scholarships will be awarded this year in it's Annual , ArtCompetition.Studentsfrom the Warm Springs area, particularly beginners are welcome to try to win their share of over 1 1 5 prizes.
