Milton Holliday Hello from Pastor Rick, Hey, I have had some good discussions af ter my last article on gambling. Some asked me if my information was sci entific. No, it is better then scientific, It is the people of the community telling me the truth. You see that's the problem with gambling, if some one has a problem with alcohol over time you see the changes in their life no matter how hard they try to cover it. With gambling the changes over time happen in ways that cannot be seen. Now if you want to know the effect of the gambling on our com munity this is what you do. Pick a couple of nights for a few weeks and go and sit and watch who is coming and going in and out of the casino. Talk to family who gamble and ask them why they gamble. After five PM go and watch the traffic of people at the pawn shop in Madras. Check out the tribal court civil calendar of debt action. Ask the local folks who do personal loans and their business load. Talk to casino staff on their views of watching people gamble. For even more scientific information contact the Tribal Counseling Cen ter. Or look up on the internet tor the effects of gambling on people and a community. Another big thank you to E.C.E for their effort in collecting a whole lot of food for the food bank. I guess they did not want to wear their P.J.'s to work. Thanks Again. We are now into the season of Lent. This is the forty days before Easter to prepare our souls for the great celebration of Easter. One God who became human and still be God. One God who loved us and still loves us to even give us life by death. One God who loves us to die then to win over death. We as believers of Jesus Christ celebrate Easter for what was not found. The tomb of Jesus was empty. We prepare our souls to un derstand what an empty tomb means to our life. To the Editor I'm writing this letter because I heard that my last letter had caused a lot of controversy. I do call the tribal offices to get some information and when I do call there is always someone asking me if there is any thing being done about the letter that I wrote. I also need to clarify some thing about my last letter that was brought to my attention. I haven't heard that anything has been done since I wrote that last letter, but that's okay. I have also heard a few comments, such as, that's not right how they're treating her, because there are a lot of us that are not tribal members of Warm Springs, and her tribe is paying for us to go to -school. "Does that sound right?" I don't think so either, but that's okay too. I have found a different way to pay for my Junior and Senior years, I filled out this application for this scholarship program. This program is called the AISES Program. In the last letter that had been written, I said that I gave up on asking the tribe for help. However, I didn't give up on my goals! I'm not sure Some very important meetings are on tap tor all tribal members regarding the gaming situation and the power enterprises which the Tribes may purchase in a long term contract. Details can be heard at the public meetings, so it is very important for all to attend. There will be district meetings on these issues and it really is your duty to attend these meetings and express your views on matters on the floor. Don't wait until everything is over and done with and start to gripe because at that time it will be too late. Everyone has that right to say what he thinks should take place on any issue set before us no matter what it may be. Either the gaming or the power enterprise. Everyone has an idea of what he would like to see, but no one knows that until the person speaks up, give his views on the matter. There might be some good ideas floating around out there but no one will know of them until a person speaks up. . The usual excuse people have is, "They already have their minds made up so why should I say anything." Maybe if everyone would speak up at these meetings these things wouldn' t happen. Like Ole Jeff says, "We've all got to pull together." In order to get things done the way we'd like to see them. The Power Enterprise can develop into something big in the future and we shouldn't ignore its position today. It may take a few years before we can realize the benefit it could have on the Tribes of today. We are always saying that we need to find other means of a stable income for the Tribes for the future, as one of our main sources is dwindling away fast and that's our forest which we have depended UDon for years now. Just about everything is on a down swing today when I will begin attending Humboldt r L -i,. i . j Qnta tt;, f- d.a.u.'. even our fisheries in all tne streams, i ney are oemg inreaienea rawaru ""'v "7 "awiru? a extotaifwedon-..ookoufortem SMSKSfflS Speaking about fisheries, remember when the Cehlo Falls was still the way this was corded in mv last .i ii i i 1 J 1 nere ana wnen tne Dig iau run wouia come, you cuuiu sec saimuu letter, jumping all over the place. Those rocks at the Celilo Falls would be swarming with fishermen and it would look like ants buzzing around making a big haul in fishing. All the fishermen making hundreds of dollars per day . People would leave in brand new cars after the big fall run. In them days you could see salmon going up any little stream over the falls and the tourists would gather by the hundreds to watch the Native Americans fishat Celilo. Yep! All those who witnessed those days have quite a story to tell of what it was really like, and today it's just like a dream of the past. There are no more Celilo Falls, which was flooded under in the 50' s, by The Dalles Dam. Today the Indians have to use Gill Nets to fish and at set seasons which are not very long and it is not half as profitable as it used to be in the Olden Days. Everything is going down at the present time even out timber resources. There are not too many large trees any more. The logging has taken most of the timber along with the wild fires that occur each summer, even control burning got our of control destroying ' millions of board feet of timber this past season. Let' s hop we can work something out with our Gaming situation and make improvements where we need them. Keep it on the reservation where we won't have to dish out money and services to Madras. Even if it looks costly, it can pull its way out to be self sustaining in no time at all. Like I said before we won't have to negotiate on taxes because it will be on the reservation. So far, I only found that the Accounting class was most challenging to mc. Some one asked me "what did you get a "C" in? I said, "English" and he said, "well don't you know how to speak it?" I said "yeah but I guess I can't right it very well." If this letter were .to be graded, I would receive and "F However, this is my letter. This semester I am enrolled in 16 units. One of my classes I am already almost finished with and this semester just begun. The reason for this is because itjust seems like most of the computer classes repeat. The only class I found challenging was my accounting class. I wanted to take the second half of this class, but in order to do this I had to change my major, so I did. Some people wanted to find out any information about if the tribe is going to help me. I just wanted to say thank you to those people, but you don't have to waste your time-I'm not!
