Spilyay Tymoo Warm Springs, Oregon 4 October 7, 1999 E Coosh EEWA: 77? iwy ft w i OIL i A -a:Lv' ::;Tr , in. it i hi --jif '.r:: .... j Speaks: The Tribal Members are upset about the He He lire. They say there should be some one held accountable for all the damage that has been done. The burning of all that prime timber and also on sacred grounds. Several calls came in asking all sorts of questions. They won der who's bright idea it was to do such a stupid thing when they knew its a high fire risk. Or do they know what they are doing? There are so many things men tioned regarding the He He fire, and they are all "legit," as far as tribal members are concerned. We have a indicator that tells us of the fire danger and it was on high risk the day the He He fire started. And there was a breeze even before they started to bum. They say we had some valuable timber in that area that burned. A control bum to get rid of a little un-wanted grass costed, "How Much?" $$$ Anyone with a little sense would have not started that control bum on a day like that and the conditions everything was. Bone dry, just waiting for a little spark to set it off. n One tribal member said, "Someone will get a big raise now, probably change of title and commended for the good job he has The fire endangered live, homes, livestock and the wildlife in that area and not to mention the cost of all the help of manpower and equipment brought in to fight the blaze. The helicopters, planes, tankers and bulldozers and all the manpower. One tribal member said he worked in the woods and they made sure he had insurance before they let him go out to work in the woods. So there must be some way to recover most of what has been lost? There timber will lose its price now and come with-in salvage loggingin that area. The recovery won' the as though it was top prices for all that timber and other natural resources. They were lucky that a lot of structures didn' t bum up as there are a lot of homes in that area. ' Is it a big Joke? As talk around fire camp was they were glad the fire started because it gave them plenty of overtime and hazard pay. People say those people could care less what happens to our timber and other resources here on the reservation. Tomorrow they will probably be some where else with out a worry in the world. Yep1 The Natives are restless and I don't blame them and I agree with them because I'm a native too. They still say that there was a pretty good breeze that day the fire started. Sure is an expensive project to get rid of a few blades of grass that probably will come back next spring, if there were seeds in the heads of the grass because if it was burned chances are they will return next spring, during green-up time as the farmers used to say in the olden Heard on the radio, just the ending of a statement that the bum did real good for that area. I can' t understand what good it done, just gave a lot of guys a lot of overtime and destroyed valuable timber. Just think what it costed to get rid of a small portion of weeds. A bum of 6, 1 00 acres of land in prime timber country, closed highway 26, causing all kinds of problems around central Oregon. Yep! Iagree with the Tribal Members that someone should be held accountable for all the damage done to the reservation. Here if we start a fire in the incinerator they about have a hemorrhage, or when we build a fire for a sweat house they about go ape, but it's OK for them to bum the whole area. Well, lets hope something will work everything out to where there might be a fair settlement in the long run. AAH-NAH-CHI-TOON ! ! ! The lawyer was advising his pretty client. "When we go to court I want you to wear a short skirt." "But they're not in style," she protested. "Do you want to be acquitted?" asked the lawyer. "Or do you want to be in style?" On ' Sunday mornings we are studying the spiritual disciplines. They are: sacred reading of the Bible. Prayer Hospitality. Worship. ' etc. To name a few. Right now we are ' studying the act of prayer. Everyone ' prays in this world. With noise, with flags, with drums, with nothing. Ev- ' eryone prays. The hardest part of prayer is in the listening. This is called meditation. To listen to God. For thousands of years men and women nave gone to meditation. Even before the days of yoga, or even yoda. Chris tians tried to listen to God. It is hard to do. The greatest problem is the ability to slow your brain down in order to hear God. I have about ten young people on Tuesday night. I took the youth group out to the lawn by the school. I gave them some ! scripture to chant. I told them to f spread out . Walk slowly in one di rection. And to try to slow down their heads then to begin to pray. To talk to God and listen. They all had the look on their faces of me being a religious nut. What they found was something that was hard to do. One kid told me that his head would not stop flowing more and more ideas into his mind. Good prayer sometimes is an act of com bat. It is a war between evil, the world, and me, myself, and I. A battle of five against one. No, five against two. The Lord is on my side for prayer. My loving God will even help me to pray to him. All I have to do is to just try. We all know the problems of our commu nity and families. Let us pray and listen to our God.
