4 January 28, 1999 Warm Springs, Oregon SpilyayTymoo E Coosh EEWA: The way it is svti, yky w , J Let's Get Ready to RRRUUWM1BBBLU1EE! In this corner we have William Jefferson Clinton. ..the impeachment trial of the President will soon be over once and for all, hopefully. Is there adequate charges against Clinton for impeachment? The defense team for Clinton is winding up their arguments and the President seems confident of keeping his position. He made some points during his state of the union. Points building up by presenting good practices he is doing as he is working for the nations benefit. Especially in the move on the Social Security issue. There is a question, is there any Democrats that are in favor for convicting the President? There needs to be a certain number of Democrats to vote on removal of the President, but as it looks there will be a hard time convincing Democrats for impeachment. As it is the Senators are not thinking of having a lengthy hearing on the case and a closed door discussion on having three witness give depositions, that of Monica Lewinsky, Vernon Jordan and Sidney Blumenthal. There are so many rumors floating around like a Senate group looking for a way the punish the President but not to remove him from office. Senators debating on the dismissal motion and get on with regular business. Hope it all ends soon.. Special Election Public Safty Branch With a total of 2020 eligible voters within the tribe, there were enough voters to make the election valid. The recent special election of the Public Safety Branch of the Confederated Tribes. As it turned out there were 440 votes yes and 421 no votes. " Now there will have to be some adjustments made in all areas of question by the people. They will have to make decisions on how to handle the situation. These decisions are to be made immediately to keep the Branch in operation. The people have made their move and now the Tribal Council will have to make their move to straighten everything out. Top management will be shifted a little to adjust to the changes requested by the people Like they say even with all the changes made there will always be the problems here on the reservation. There is never a complete ' change overnight, because we will always have our problems around here. We will need our police force, our ambulance crews, our fire fighters, our emergency crews for accidents such as EMT's. No matter what kind of changes there are that will be made we will still need all these departments for our own protection.. All those mentioned at the Public Meetings need to be addressed by the tribal council and decisions to be made to remove or to improve the situation. As it is the more you preach against things the worse it gets. There will always be the Alcoholics, the Dope, oops, I mean the dope users and drug dealers etc. There will always be some king of gang stuff around here. If there would be any changes it won't come over night and it will take some time to do so. Some of the things mentioned during the public hearings about the police department is that nonIndians come in get a job and after a while they are sent away for special training and after they complete their training they come work for a short period of time and than move on to some other police department for better wages.. Just a little Suggestion, "If we send any more non-Indians," for special training, they should sign a contract that when they complete their training they will work here for five years at least for getting that special training. If they should fail to do so they should pay back all funds spent on them for the training. It is visible where we have sent personnel off for special police training and when they completed their training they got better jobs on other police forces like Jefferson County and others. We have spent a lot of money training men for other police departments. Like I said earlier they should work here for at least five years or if they don't they should pay back what was spent on them. I know it's a tough job, a job I wouldn't want, where a person has to arrest his friends during a party and stuff like that, but that's the way it is. AAAH-NAH-CHI-TOON ! ! ! J I J SS SS Community member speaks Letter to the editor. our Native modIc is not about one Letter to the editor, Dearcommunity,"Asingle arrow will break easily under pressure but when in a bundle they will not," these are the wise and simple words of an admirable elder. Over the past four hundred years time, beginning in 1492, 150 million Native Americans were exterminated across the Western Hemisphere, and we honor them with our existence today to tell of their struggles. We have survived and will continue to do so; that is how we honor our ancestors to come. Our ways of life went undisturbed for thousands of years. We as native people governed and maintained our own nations, cultures, spirituality, identities, and societies. Even after the arrival of foreign nations we survived, adapted, and endured. We survived the affects of policy that aimed to acculturates into the "Western" culture, assimilate us into the model framework, relocate us from our homelands, and for many termination of their Indian existence and social identity. Finally, today we are living in a time of tribal self-governance and this is a right constantly under threat. The story of the survival of Community support was greatly appreciated- To the editor, My people, family, and friends. I would like to take this time to ex press myself. It has come to the cross roads, in which path has to be taken. No matter what the outcome is of the referen dum, the decision is up to the people, because it expresses how the people feel. It has been a hard time for the , family during these past 6-7 months now. A lot has happened during this time, fhings not expected to happen. The wrongful death of my nephew had a purpose, and that was to bring the people together as one. I was taught that all things had a purpose in life. There is a beginning and ending in our circle of life. We are taught that you face death, it's the ending of the circle of life. When a loved one is taken from you unexpectedly, then there was a purpose for it. Maybe the Creator did not want the person to suffer no more or be ill later in life. I was taught that things have a purpose and I believe that my nephews death had a purpose. It was to show the people how things really were and what could really happen to other people if not corrected. The struggles we as a people have overcome were done at the success of working and living together for the common and greater good. I believe the greatest quality Native people have is their ability to adapt, endure, and remain strong, even under the harshest of circumstances. I have heard some say "Our greatest enemy is ourselves." I refuse to believe that because it is not our nature to create enemies amongst our own. We cannot afford the high cost of adversarial relationships amongst each other. Especially, when so many outsiders have been against us fro far too long. It is a great injustice to ourselves to allow the use of deadly words and assumptions to be aimed at killing the human spirit. It is an intolerable act to dishonor and deny the beauty of an individual's integrity, existence, and humanity. Now is nit the time for us, as a people, to fall prey to misleading notions and join the dividing lines that keep us from working together. There are so many important issues for us to be concentrating our efforts on because they are threatened; our lie Safety Branch, your job is sup pose to be what is in your job de scription. You cannot be personally involved with the victim, no matter whether it is your family or not. There is a memo in the tribes that the GM's and supervisors are to be held accountable for their employees actions. In this case, there should have been a reliable person who knew what they were doing. Someone who was certified as an EMT more than basic. There are persons on the reser vation that are far advanced as a paramedic but were not hired full time. One was trained out of the US Navy, and the other one out of the US Marines and several other persons. We have a gentleman who was training the EMT's up to the stan dards past basics to respond, but re signed for reason. Today has come to the end, I am going to lay to rest my nephew on February 6, at the Simnasho Long house. It has been a time of sorrow, and we have to let him finish his journey. I would like to thank the Tribal Council people for being so patient with the family, and assisting when they could. I would like to say thank you and Games wanted Board games wanted to donate to the Warm Springs Corrections de partment. As the new millennium approaches we are faced with many issues, such as, the US. Congress' continuation with anti-Indian legislative initiatives. It is the "divide and conquer" concept that propels people like Sen. Slate Gordon, R-WA., to constantly set forth legislation that will divide the unity of native people. He is only one of many that is against us. When we are a divided people, we are weak people; that only adds strength to the efforts of our adversaries and those unaware of our struggles. We as a people have come so far despite the many obstacles we have had to overcome. We have so much and so many of our people to be proud of. I am filled with an overwhelming sense of pride to see the numbers of our people fighting to preserve and strengthen our ways of life as native people. We must encourage our future generations to become more educated and knowing of the ways of a new technological and advancing age. In the next millennium education and knowledge will be our best insurance to our apologize to my brothercousin Charles Calica, for I know that he had done his job. Not family to fam ily, but from business to business. I know that it must be hard to be placed into this situation. I know that his education and knowledge will be for the best interest of the entity because that is his job, to protect the tribes. When you are in a position such as this, it's hard not to side with your family and stay mutual for all parties is his job. Ji everything would have been in place at the time of the incident, then we would not be where we are today. If the tribal code, policies were in place or the employees trained past the basics. This would not have hap pened. My nephew would be alive today with all his children. I want to thank the people who voted for the referendum whether it passes or not. At least you voice yourself and it's your right to question things you think is not right. I want to thank all the people who have supported the family during this time with comforting words of en couragement. It has been our way of life from time immemorial to plan and prepare for generations beyond our present existence. We cannot get so caught up in the here and now that we forget our greater purpose on this earth. Each of our lives are so precious and we honor our Creator by using our time on this earth wisely and for a greater good. We have come so far, and yet we still have a long way to go. We must not lose focus and think in terms of greater good of all. Remember we are all relations. Respectfully, Direlle R.
