training for employees
Kah-Nee-Ta's management
training program was created for
advancement of Tribal members to
management positions here at the
Resort. Kah-Nee-Ta tries to maintain
trainees at all times. They currently
have one graduate, Carlos Smith,
Rooms Division Manage, Gerald
Sampson, Jr., in his second year and
will be moving to the Food and
Beverage Department in September.
The third and newest trainee is Scott
Moses. Scott put the program on hold
this year to take a position as village
Gate Manage. He will be moving to
the accounting department this win
ter. A Kah-Nee-Ta trainee signs on
for a period of three years and ill
work in the various departments of
the resort. This enables the trainee to
find which area of management he
she will pursue. While Kah-Nee-Ta
does not guarantee a management
position after three years, the trainee

Kah-Nee-Ta has been advertising
for a management trainee for another
position this summer. Receiving only
two applicants, the position has re
mained open in hopes of attracting
ambitions Tribal members to apply.
This Management Trainee position

Do you have any girls interested
in powwow dancing ages between 4
14? We would like to try this to bring
the little girls back into dancing and
out of gangsviolence. Also just to
have fun working with the younger
generation and bring them together.
As teenagers these days we have to
be good role models. This would
help. If you would like to help us,
you are more than welcome. We are
looking for a fairly large place to
practice and rehearse without charge.

works full time for the Kansas Army
National Guard as a helicopter and flight

the program. Upon the veteran's
death, a one-time payment of $255
also may be made to the veteran's
spouse or child. In addition, a
veteran may qualify at age 65 for
Medicare's hospital insurance and
medical insurance. Medicare
protection also is available to
people who have received Social
Security disability benefits for 24
months, and to insured people and
their dependents who need dialysis
or kidney transplants.
Active duty or active duty for
training in the U.S. uniformed
services has counted toward Social
Security since January 1957. Since
Jan. 1, 1988, work as a member of
the Armed Forces Reserve
components while on inactive duty
for training also counts toward
Social Security. Servicemembers
and veterans receive an extra $300
credit for each quarter in which
they received any basic pay for
active duty or active duty for
training after 1956 and before
1978. After 1977, acredit of $100
is granted foreach $300of reported
wages up to a maximum credit of
$1,200. No additional Social
Security taxes are withheld from
pay for these extra credits. Also,
noncontributory Social Security
credits of $160 a month may be
granted to veterans who served
after Sept. 15, 1940, and before
1957, including attendance at
service
academies. Further
younger brother to sniper fire in March
of 197 1 , while he was serving in Vietnam.
Gene and Karolyn both speak from the
heart on issues of Post Traumatic Stress
and some personal traumas in their lives.
Del Wantland: Del is the Director of
Point Man International Ministries. He
and his wife Sue and children live in
Sheridan, Michigan. While serving with
the 1 st Cavalry Division in Vietnam and
walking third in "the stick," he was
wounded. Since that time, he has been in
a wheel chair, but does not let that get in
his way. He has struggled with many of
the same issues other vets have had to
work through anger, bitterness and
unforgi veness, depression, addictions but
he made some deliberate choices in his
life which have brought him healing and
freedom. His smile will brighten your
day and give you a hope
Paul Huges: Paul's story is an account
that will certainly contribute to the healing
and recovery needed in the aftermath of
war. His is a testimony to how a powerful
and loving God can take a wounded,
broken, desperate man's life and
transform it into one of faith, service,
and hope. Paul's dynamic delivery and
novel humor, along with his straight
forward approach of "the issues" has
made him a sought after speaker,
appearing on the 700 Club, PTL program
and others, as well as minister-ing to
those behind bars. He is a decorated
veteran of the Vietnam war and is married
with one daughter, You can pick up a
copy of his autobiography, the shadow
of Death, at the conference.
Oscar Ramirez: Oscar served in
Vietnam in '67-68 and when he returned,
was assigned to special duty as an Honor
GuardFuneral Detail, accompanying the
bodies of the men killed in the land he
had just left. During the Gulf War, Oscar
was activated and served on special
assignment, he began counseling after
being ordained into the ministry and over
the following 20 years, has developed
the highly effective process known as
Biblical Reality Therapy. Oscar lives in
Miami, Florida and works with the Miami
Rescue Mission there as Counseling
Supervisor, as well as speaking frequently
court may enter a complaint for contempt of court
and issue a warrant for your arrest.

Income
For those age 65 or older and
those who are blind or otherwise
disabled, Supplemental Security
Income (SSI) may be provided, if
they have little or no income or
resources. States may supplement
the federal payments to eligible
persons and may disregard
additional income. Although VA
compensation and pension
benefits are counted. Also, not all
resources count in determining
eligibility. Forexample, aperson's
home and the land it is on do not
count, regardless of value.
Personal effects, household goods,
automobiles and life insurance
may not count, depending upon
their value. Information and
assistance in making application
for these payments may be
obtained at any Social Security
office or by calling 1-800-772-

Pastor Norman Clear: Norman was
born and raised in Arkansas and says he
smoked from the time he was knee-high
to a grasshopper and began drinking about
that time, too. It was a way of life down
in those parts. He served his country
during the Korean war and came home
with some of the symptoms of PTSD.
But they didn't call it that back then.
Today Norm is a highly respected
minister, counselor and leader in his
community here in The Dalles and
across the country and is called upon
by, no only his own congregation
here at Covenant, but by pastors
nation-wide for counseling and
ministry. He has a wonderful gift of
wisdom and insight into the heart
issues of life.
Norm Bergsma; Drafted into the
army in 1968 , he was assigned to the
25th Infantry and sent to Vietnam' in
March of 21969. Norm exhibits his
paintings here this weekend, and
expression of one man's journey through
PTSD & the struggle to come to terms
with war and its aftermath.
Larry Barkemeyer: Larry served
with the 1st of the 39th Artillery along
the border of Laos and up on the DMZ in
1 970-7 1 . He returned to the U. S. to face
many of the same battles of life that other
veterans did. Larry incorporates words
and music to express the emotions and
tell the stories of the men and women
who served in the Vietnam War. Presently
Larry is a social worker in Cottage Grove.

veterans and their families, make new
friends, experience real spiritual

during informative discussion groups.
