Warm Springs, Oregon SpilyayTymoo E Coosh EEWA: The way it is 4 January 23, 1998 ...iT. dfc TTT i 1 MM iFti HIT r r rrl it f m 1PIB svt-lyKY " Since the sun is shinning and it's bright out side maybe we all feel a bit on the up and up side of things. Like that Ole saying goes, "Sticks and Stones may hurt my bones, but Words will never Harm me." Well going back to the last issue of the Spilyay Tymoo where I mentioned several issues we should be watching out for and how to run a business. Well I'm glad someone give's me a bad time on issues raised , which means someone is reading what is mentioned in those articles. The only thing is they take it to heart and make it as though I'm trying to run the reservation instead of settling down and reasoning things out to realize these are just things we should be preparing ourselves to watch out for and to get with their representatives that they are concerned about. There are several issues that do need special attention but there are those who never participate in tribal affairs in attending or speaking up at general meetings or turn out to vote during tribal elections. If they are not satisfied with what is elected into the tribal council they have no grounds to stand on because they didn't participate during the elections. There are always negative feelings about the out come of tribal elections which could have been different if they had participated, so it their own fault for not getting out to vote. The only time many can be heard is when they don ' t receive a Bonus Check. Many have the attitude of, "What' s the use, they already have their minds made up, why should I vote on those matters." That's the wrong attitude to have because this is your show and things could be different if you would fully participate right along with the other members of the tribe. There are things that do need re-alignment in our Organization to keep a firm structure. We boast of being a reservation of great quality and I'm sure we are if weiend to business in the right way. At the present time there are other reservations who are doing very well for themselves by doing business in a business like manner. There are some reservations who at one time had no means of income, but once they got on their feet they are doing very well and are beginning to provide well for their tribal members with education,, Homes, employment etc. They are now in a position to offer their members better opportunities such as scholarships, for students, employment is improving, their health benefits have improved, their employment situation is on an up swing and all of this comes from careful planning and decision making by all tribal members as a whole. They appreciate what they have and are making progress to a brighter future. Some have learned the hard way from experiencing the hardships of having their reservation come to an end during the day's of termination. They struggled for years and finally had their tribes re-established for Federal Recognition once again. Yep! the days of termination set a lot of tribes way back and it' s hard to get back on one' s feet after an experience such as that. We are fortunate to have had leaders who fought against termination to keep our reservation in tact, even though those dollar signs looked very tempting. Just think what could a person do with 30-40 thousand dollars.: Well many reservations ended up with that kind of dollars which didn't last very long for some people. I believe if we keep our "Cool," and not bicker among each other and watch what we do we will be on the right track for a while. "AHH-NAH-CHI-TOON! ! Toe Walking into the bar, Harvey said to the bartender. " Pour me a stiff one, Eddie. I just had another fight with the little woman." "Oh yeah?" Eddie said. "And how did this one end." "When it was over," Harvey replied, "my wife came to me on her hands and knees," "Really?" Now there's a switch! What did she say." "She said, 'Come out from under that bed, you gutless weasel!" YIKES SS SS After being arrested for robbery, This guy hired the best lawyer in town. "Look," the crook said, "I've got nearly a million in cash in my bank box. Can you get me off?" The lawyer said, "Believe me, pal, you'll never go to prison with that kind of money." ' And sure enough he didn't. He went to prison flat broke. YIKES SS SS Approaching the woman at a singles' bar, the young man said, "Hi, cookie. How about a date?" "Forget it," she said. "I never go out with perfect strangers. "We're both in luck," he said. "I'm far from perfect." YIKES Editor's Note Spilyay Tymoo welcomes articles and letters from its readers. All letters, preferably 300 words or less, musi be signed by the author. QVE!ht(S Ness SS SS What is normal?... t tu Aitn second thin To the editor. - Hello from Pastor Rick. I had a thought. What happens when a com munity has a steady stream of death throughout the year? What becomes normal thinking? What becomes nor mal living? Warm Springs lost about one percent of tribal members last year. Most towns, and cities do not nave one percent population loss. If , Bend, Oregon lost one percent in one year, it would be on CNN, and every newspaper in America. What is a normal world that has a high death rate? What comes to mind is a long term war. War brings a steady stream of grief, depression, sadness, and worst of all a slow process of the hardening of the heart. A process that happens to everyone in order to protect yourself from the steady in jection of pain that death brings to life. Now, what can Warm Springs do? First thing is to stop a hardened heart. Love softens all hard material. So love someone who needs love. Help someone who needs help. The hardened heart says "It's their life, it's their decision". Wrong...a part of being a community is that your joy is my joy, your pain is my pain. Warm Springs is a community that needs more tough love. Say something. Tell someone you love to go get help. Go to Treatment for the addiction. Go and get help for your anger. Say "Do something to change". Become a loving pain in the side of someone you love. A rela tionship with God brings changes to our life. Why not a community hav ing a relationship with God to bring changes across all of Warm Springs. My spirit is not patched together...I'm proud of my scars and stripes. Maybe my life hasn't been easy but these scars tell a story."
