4 January 2. 1998 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo Sahaptin lessons SAHAPTIN LANGUAGE LESSON YUUPI SONG INTRO: This weeks Sahaptin Lessons will be on some of the songs our people use for dancing, and some songs of other activity used for fun songs with children. The lesson for today will be on the Yuupai song. WANAQ'IT YUUPI WALPTAIKASH Yuupi iwi tauwiptpama walptaikash Yuupai is a gift song. Walptaikash chi iwa Waxpushpalmaml. This is a Paiute song. Lamafma pataniya Wasq'upamaman. It was given by the Klamath people to the Wasco people. Chikuuk Mllilama pawalptaiknxa Yuupai. Now Warm Springs people sing it, too. BACKGROUND: There are several different Yuupai songs. The words don't have any particular meaning. They are Paiute songs which were given by the Klamath people to the Wasco people, long long ago, way back before there were any wars between the tribes. Each song is sung two or three times. Then the song ends, by the singers singing "Hiii Yaa!" three times. NAPLKWI YUUPAI WALPTAIKASH NAXSH WASQW'LIKT INTRO: The Sahaptin lesson for today is on singing the , Yuupai Song. Please sing along with us from our local newspaper, the Spilyai Taiymu. The song will be sang three times. This completes the lesson on the second verse, have you sang along and learned the tune so that you can sing along with the chil dren when they come home and sing the songs they are learning in class at school. Some people will tell you, it is'nt Yuupai, it is Yuupa, but we learned the song as Yuupai, So thats the way we are teaching the song. We have all the three tribes using the song and dance. So when you do the song and dance with one of the tribes of our reservation, just be nice and do it their way. Practice the song and dance until you learn, and when you go to the longhouse you will be able to participate in the dance. We will sing the song with you once more. YUUPAI ,. Tuesday and Thursday Nights 4:00 to 6:00 Due to increased interest we will be expanding the class to two nights a week In order to maximize teacher time all class levels will be combined. heard Valerie's got new computer programs in our native language. If, Aha, Aa. Yeah she does, programs in all three languages. Language Program Report... I would like to take the time here to thank all who have supported and made the efforts to become a part of the language program. It has taken great efforts to be able to saturate the community with language, and keep our lan guages alive. We have been very pleased with the coordinated efforts that have occurred with the Kindergarten classes, the Spilyay newspa per, and the KWSO radio station. There are many out there who deserve a big pat on the back for encouraging words and reaching out to the program to assist with our needs. So thank you all for this past years assistance, and we look forward to your continued support of the program. There will be some changes in the next 1 year in regards to the format that had been ; developed for the Spilyay and the KWSO lan-' guage materials. Beginning with the January' Spilyay issue we will be having one full week of Sahaptin lessons with the following week being a full week of Wasco lessons. The next issue of the Spilyay will then have full week of Sahaptin and a full week of Paiute lessons. The KWSO radio station will then follow the format devel oped for the Newspaper and do a full week of Sahpatin, a full week of Wasco, followed with a full week of Sahaptin and a full week of Paiute. Look forward to this to happen throughout the 1998 year. We will also hope to include lessons that will be going on in the Kindergarten and community classes to further your efforts to learning your language of choice. Continue to follow along with the lessons, and we do look forward to a year when we will be having more language being used in our community. Our languages are important to keeping our self identities and working towards a healthier community by the year 2000.
