Happy Birthday Val, "Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat; Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit." We are still able to go the the ocean, great mountains and hear, sec, and feci the cold waters of the great rivers, creeks, and small streams. We can still sec and hear, know also of our family, the elk, fish, bison, birds, deer, wolf, and bals eagle, the great symbol of the American llag. We arc natives of this land which our great Golden Eagle looks down on us and calls. But now so many of us are now being called, taken on spiritual wings, lift and rise with the wind, but our spirit and memories will forever re main with our grandchildren. In this day and age, our family should hang on to this way of life, now and always. A member of the Yakama Nation. Charles Paul T. Anderson P.O. The listing of upper Columbia Basin stcelhead as endan gered and Snake River stcelhead as threatened is one more event in a series thai stretches back at least on hundred years which could deprive tribes of their inherent, sovereign, treaty reserved fishing rights." said Ted Strong, l-xecutivedireclorof the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission. Strong pointed out that if man agement actions resorted naturally spawning populations to healthy lev els then both Indians and non-Indians could fish. The tribes support these of supplementation to help natu rally spawning populations, restora tion of natural river conditions by modifying dams, and protection as well as restoration of spawning and rearing habitat. A while back, an investigator came by my mom's house, where I live, to talk to me. I was told my him that I had done something ugly to my nephew. When I heard this, I just could not believe it. Well, anyway, I told him that I didn't do it and that I was sure I didn't. The nephew I'm talking about is my favorite nephew. I always take up for him no matter who made him cry. I would never do anything to harm him, ever, If anything, I spoil him. Well, I was told that if I said I did it, I would get sent away. You know, when I was out in the world, I have to say I did things I shouldn't have. For this I would like to say I'm sorry. I've been trying so hard to stay sober. I have been sober now, as of this letter, 797 days. I Happy Birthday Brian Suppah August 30th. Love, Mom & Dad and the rest of the family Hope vou had a Happy 7th Birthday August 2nd Coleicia K. The recently signed secretarial order calls forcon sullation between the National Ma rine Fisheries Service and Iribescon cerning Endangered Species Act list ings such as this. There have been no such consultations. Strong also pointed out the ap parent double standard the federal agency used to determine which populations to list and which to de fer or ignore. Instead, I was told by the investigator . that they have had a lot of bad things to say about me. You know, when I have myself to the Lord about two months ago, even after being sober this long, a whole new world opened up for me. Now, because of this, my world is crumbling down. You know I walked with Satan for 22 years and now that I am on the other side, he does not like it. He will use any means he can to bring me down. I was told by my pastor that the hardest battles I will have are not out there, but within my own family. I have been trying so hard to do good for myself. Not long ago, I got my driver's license, which I never had before. I have insurance for me and my car. I got tired of waiting for a job, so I made my own. Instead of try ing to re-connect these populations, NMFS puis up artificial barriers to keep them from interbreeding which they did before dams, logging, and other impacts fragmented them into isolated groups. NMFS views artifi cial propagation to keep these popu lations from going extinct only as a last resort. Given the role NMFS has played in developing hatcheries in the Snake River Basin, their turn about on hatcheries leaves us won dering what NMFS will propose next that will diminish the tribes' treaty fishing. "NMFS' approach to stcelhead habitat degradation and dam-related moralities will bring us one step closer to the violation of the solemn treaty promises of the United States gov ernment and to the abrogation of the trust responsibility every federal agency has to uphold those pledges."
