4Mav22,1997 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo jhj E Coosh EEWA: The way it is The trend here in Warm Springs is to become the healthiest reservation by the year 2000. Is it really possible? The words sure sound good and a pretty picture is painted but in reality things are much more different. Well, this is in reference to the use of drugs and alcohol. It is true that there have been many individuals who have taken the right direction in their lives by discontinuing the use of drugs and alcohol. Theireffort to improve their lives should commended and hopefully some of it will rub off to the younger generation. There are some who have gone to a . . t treatment center ana now are their own accord; are suppose to be doing real well. But it is up to the individual to make up his own S'vcn medical attention first, before mind to do this and thats to change his life style. When one makes cve" 0UKI3, into facility, or trans u: - a a .u- ii .u- u ii in ported too Mountain View for obscr- up his mind to do something like this he usually sticks to it. But Nation. Make sure nothing happens when those who are forced to go to a treatment facility, it's like to them, when right state of mind, being sentenced to serve days in jail and it doesn't do them any thcn 10 be incarcerated for their good, becaues they are just waiting for those days to come to an chacrfpc0 e in ured shoujd be mcdi end and they are right back at their old habits of using drugs and caiiy Sed' firTalsoTeforeTven or alcohol. Yep! when they are ordered to go for treatment they brought to the facility. In most cases just go through the motions and don t take any consideration on why they are there, but just wait for the day to come when they can leave. It's those who have really made up their minds that this is what they want, to try to better their lives and go to treatment are the ones who succeed in life after they have gone for treatment. It seems like the more you talk against drugs and alcohol the more the people go for the stuff. And there are some who say, "It's all in the head, I don't need to go to treatment, I can quit when ever I want to." But they never do, they continue to use the drugs and alcohol and usually have to hock things to get what they need. They even go and steal stuff even from friends to get money to get what ever they need to turn them selves on. Yep ! like a beg, barrow and steal situation. To steal from your own people to sell valuable keep sakes of Indian regalia, that's bad. Some of those are keep sakes handed down for generations as valuable keep sakes. But that doesn't bother the person who is desperate on getting the Stuff. Some of those old Indian regalia is priceless but the addict let's it go for what ever he can get for it, just as long as he can get a fix, or what ever they call it. Again when a person does go for treatment and successfully completes the program and is ready to start a new life, there are always those who will try and drag him back down to their level like a bunch of devils. They can't stand to see someone trying to do good for himself. The truth is they would like to be the one who has successfully completed treatment but they have no guts to go through with what it takes, r.o they try to belittle those who have good through treatment and are doing good for them selves. Yep! Drugs and Alcohol doesn't do anyone any good, it creates health problems, loss of work time causes hardship on friends relatives and who ever, it even causes damage to the mind. "Let's see what was I doing. Oh! Yeah, I was writing about drugs." One thing leads to another when a person is hooked on drugs and the dealer knows he has them over a barrel and doesn't care where or how they come up with the cash. Well, the year 2000, is getting near and hopefully we can reach our goal or come close to what we have set out do . Ahh-Nah-Chi-Toon!!! There's no need for another "Accidental Death or Suicide" in the facility be fore anything is done, on these con cerns to be listed. It not Only con cerns the facility, but the community Also and their familics....No Bud get! Concerns: a) People with incur able diseases; should not even incar cerated in the facility, it's a high risk factor for corrections staff and in mates, who all have families, who can be endangered by the family member exposed to the disease. b) People to intoxicated, passed out, drugged out, unable to walk on Thank you Spiritual healers, friends, relatives To the editor, Greetings Spilyay Ty moo readers far and near. It is a good day to die, but a better day to be alive, be happy, be well and in the best of health. Hope my little letter has found you all well and feeling just fine. In the beginning the Creator gave us a good life. However, a year and a half ago was a healing time for me. Today is the time for a renewal of my life. During my difficult times in life a large number of relatives, friends, co-workers let me know how much they cared about me. It seems every one was reaching out with compassion and a lot of concern for me. During my difficult time of my illness I lost almost half my body weight of 200 pounds. I was a bag of bones, maybe just skin and bones, of a little over a 1 00 pounds. My closest relatives Sherri Smith and Norma Smith were over concerned for me at this time, they had me admitted to the local hospital intensive care ward. I was a pitiful sight. I could not hardly walk, talk or drive my self around. I was just worthless, depressed, and in a withdrawn condition. The good doctors and other medical staff in town tried their very best to make well with all their professional skills. In their efforts they could do very little good. After a few months, my weight up to 1 50 pounds. The doctors discharged me from their care and let me go home to make it on my own. Facility holds maximum of 36 people according to Fire-Safety regulations and O.S.H.A. the bathroom and shower facilities are not up to stan dards for the over crowding. 2. The facility has been averaging 45-50 people. Overcrowding has been caus ing flair us, by inmates and staff, could lead to injuries (more). 3. People attending court on Fridays, can be allowed to check in on Mondays-Tuesdays, leaving the facility open for weekends, for people brought in. 4. Inmate workers, work release, inmates outside work de tails, should be given furloughs over the weekends, report back Monday evenings. 5. People exclusions re leased, taking off reservation to make room. 6. People with half time served should be given parole, cutting down people making room. 7. People with 30 days or less can be given some death bed, I was introduced to the powers of Indian healing circle of the Warm Springs 1910 Shakers, The Medicine SingersHealers and our 7 drum Spiritual Singers. These three groups of healing people did an outstanding job of bringing me out of my death bed. These good Indian Medicine People were my first cousin Silas Williams, his late wife, Prunie Williams and Grandma Bernice Mitchell. The 1910 Shakers who worked on me was the late Les Howtopat and all his young and old Shaker healers, singers, bell ringers, the power congregation. The Seven Drum Spiritual Singers I also enjoyed very much were under the healing powers of Ron Suppah, they were great. All these healing power people were present at my home, they paid me a visit that was spiritually strong. They were all compelled to be of good healing service to me. If not for them and their healing power I might not be enjoying this world today. Some people let me know that my guardian angels were making sure it was not my time to go to the longhouse to be put to rest. It is an enjoyable feeling, a darn good feeling of accomplishment when our good Indian doctors can bring you back to being healed back to good health. Today I can smile, have my Indian pride, be happy about life, it is good to be back. Conclusion: I feel our legal sys tem can take lead in Indian County by setting up Policy and Procedures and enforcing them, protection of individual rights, concerning the health and welfare of corrections staff, inmates and community. The jail facility is not equipped to handle more than maximum 36 people, that's not counting juveniles. For some time this facility has been in violation of OSHA and Fire & Safety regulations, which could cause shut down. Where Individual rights are con cerned, what about the community and their rights, along with correc tion staff and inmates of facility, that's the majority in danger. There should be an IMS nurse here every day, not just on call for dental, doctor appointments, refill medicine, whose certified, to assist with decisions on people brought into facility. Deciding options of incar ceration, isolation or Mt. View Hos pital for observation. The staff is not trained or medically inclined to make these decisions. Lets work together for our people. Respectfully, A spokesperson, Big Rat Suppah thanks to all the good 1910 Shakers of Warm Springs Indian Reservation, the local and north end seven drum, Silas and his Medicine Singers.
