SpilyayTymoo 4 August 21, 1996 Warm Springs, Oregon E Coosh EEWA: Vie way it is .... :rr ww-'r?" ; . . ;. .-::.,. : -v, ' r rr "Jr. When you drive to downtown Portland you see all those new housing developments with those nice looking houses being built. Looks so pleasing to where it would be worth while spending money on something like that. A house just the way a person wants it to look and not what someone else builds. At one time there was space between Portland and Gresham, space between Portland and Oregon City, space between Portland and Beaverton, but today the whole area seems to be connecting into one big city. Where there used to be berry I T Back to School Do's starting August 15 thru September 30 10 off all student perms at Braids & Boots Hair Salon 553-6434 With Di or Rebel Tribal member voices concerns Wanted: place to rent Want to rent a olace in Toonenish or Wapato; older, responsible, In- Hipp's boxer trunks were made by dian female student with a young Indians in Warm Springs? But how To the editor, I was very impressed by the beau tiful workmanship of the new line of clothing by Warm Springs Apparel Industries. It seems more traditional, closer to home than some of the past shots they've had. However, there's a major concern that I think fellow Tribal Members and Tribal Council should recognize in considering re opening the sewing plant. How many non-natives are able to work on one piece of clothing a vest, or a bag, or a shirt before it loses it's label of Native American made? For example, some people in Warm Springs beamed with pride when they heard on TV that Joe many people knew that those trunks were designed by a non-native, and assembled by three Hispanics, two non-natives, and just one Tribal member.. ..all at Warm Springs Ap parel? Once the trunks were com plete, the Tribal Members who were there were asked if they "wanted to sew a couple of lines on the trunks?" As an employee who say it happen, I felt no pride. Those trunks might as well have been stamped: Made in Korea. During the time that I was em ployed at WSAI, I saw many Tribal Members come and go because they weren't able to work as fast as pro duction demanded. I saw chairs that were filled with Tribal Members, Married Into the Tribes, or Indian not Affiliated go empty. To be re placed by Hispanics or non-natives. Our people on the reservation may not be able to work as fast as some people who are not Native Americans. .but there is one thing that you can see in our work. ..that's pride. Compare any beaded item cranked out on an assembly like to one made nice and easy by the little old lady in Simnasho. You'll see the difference in both value and craftsmanship. By the time my wife left WSAI, over half of the employees were His panic and non-native. And Warm Springs Apparel was still telling their clients that their products could be labeled "Native American Made". I ask my fellow Tribal Members and Tribal Council to consider this. I dauehter wants to rent a 1-2 fur nished apartment, house, trailer, etc. for between $350-$550 a month. Need tn move immediately, classes farms and stuff, there are new shopping centers now. The Atomic Bomb: I hear that our Indian people are used as examples in the court and There is much controversy over the dropping the Atomic bomb other offices, when our Indian people on Japan some 51 years ago. Today many feel that the United are hurt or killed in a accident, caused States owes and apology to the J apanese people for the distraction b fSf heSdthese words from" the bomb did many years ago. And there those who have lived a court judge, why do we the Indian" through those terrible war years and remember what it was like at people have to be used as examples' that time. Today it appears that the act was down right cruelty to drop the bomb, killing many people in Hiroshima, where the blast was davastating and leveled a wide area causing panic in Japan, and finally came down to surrender to end world war II. Yep! It was a massive killing of people in Japan, to where it laws that our creator gave us from looks bad for the United States today. But there are those who the beginning of time, we live by experienced them days of World War II, can tell you that this was ttZZ' SZi'irl ii ru u cj .l u j are taught these things from a little a small portion of the number of deaths that might have occurred chiw and we are taught with kind !f il 1 l j. J J T1 A II 1 - ! . ,1 ' ii ine oomo was not dropped, i ne Allies were ciosmg in on ine mainland of Japan, but the closer they got to Japan the higher rate of casualties were piling up on both sides. At the same time all the Japanese people would rather die than to surrender to the United States. To fight to their death because it was their belief. Take the people who were living on the Island of Siapan, when the Americans were advancing trying to get them to surrender they would take their own lives, even the women and children were jumping over the cliffs rather than surrender. Now consider just how many more people would have either commited suicide or fought to their death on the mainland of Japan rather than surrender, thus making casualties that much higher for both sides. People to day don't realize what the Japanese army put their prisoners through during war time. All prisoners both military and words and love, the elders of the Indian people teach the little chil dren, not getting mad or screaming at us, but talking with good words and kind feelings. We are taught to re spect one another and show respect to other's. If you want respect, show respect to others. We are also taught to respect our dead and let them rest for a time set by our elders. It might be 6 months up to 5 years. During this time we put all things away that belonged to that deceased person and we don't talk about the person. We are taught that this is a time when is the hardest for the deceased. As they are making a journey to that promised land. In each language, all over the world, each religion and people talk of the promised land that our creator made for us. We only live here on this earth for a short time. Then we go on to the other world. Then we must stand before our creator and justify all the things that we have done while we were on this earth. At that time we cannot hide anything we may have done while we were living. The Indian people of America, love our people and our heritage, our lives have changed so much and con tinues to change, this is why we fight to hold on to what little we have. Tribal member of the CTWS, Wilfred R. Jim (aka Manny) Thankful for daughters opportunity To the editor, ' Thanks, to Lori and daughter Louisa for taking my daughter out to pick huckleberries for feast at Dry Creek. I really appreciate Valerie having the opportunity to learn where the berries are. This includes the movies after the feast! Thanks to Aunt Roma too. Thanks to everyone who wished Valerie happy birthday and stayed to eat ice cream and cake. To Willie and family, it was good to have your presence at the feast. Last of all, I appreciate the words of encouragement through Big Rat's health misfortunes. It helps my family through the times of misunderstandings. Respectfully submitted, Longhouse Suppah Thanks to civilian faced such tretcheous torture it was un-speakabel. It was scary to think what might happen if they came and invaded the United States. For me, I feel the bomb was justified only killing what people it did and saving many, many more lives if the war had gone to their mainland. Therefore, change it.. .hire some body perhaps a cultural advisor who will make sure that if we are to put our Tribal label on it and call it Indian made, that it will be made (inspired, designed, assembled, and distributed) by Native Americans. Our Tribes deserve that much cred ibility. That's my concern. Thank you for your time.
