4 July 3, 1996 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo E Coosh EEWA: Tlie way it is SVIhYb-Y The Pi-um-sha days are in the past as tribes from all parts of the Pacific northwest gathered to celebrate with the Warm Springs people during the week end. People like celebrations and will ravel miles and miles to attend a pow-wow. Sometimes I can't understand why we celebrate the treaty signing anniversary. Where we had to give up millions of acres of land and moved onto a small reservation to live. "Oh well, if you can't beat-um join-um. Take the fourth of July, the dav the declaration of independence was signed for all Americans to be free and live in a country of our own and to defend it with our lives if necessary. Today everything is taken for granted. Many people don't stop to realize why we celebrate the fourth of July. To most people it's just a holiday and a day away from the job. Some people don't even know what the fire works represent, all it is to them is pretty explosions in the air at night, and why the American flag is displayed all over on the fourth of July. Yep! like I said, to some its just a paid holiday. Why do all Americans are ready to defend the old Red, White and Blue, Old Glory, the Stars and Stripes. Men and women are ready to stand behind the country to fight for our rights to be free. As a matter of fact would we be able to have a pow-wow if we were under the Communist rule? Take Memorial Day, at one time memorial day was set aside to honor all those who died fighting for our country. But as time passed it opened up to everyone in a family to remember loved ones that have passed on. Today it's called decoration, a day to honor all family members where everyone goes to the cemetery and put flowers on loved ones. In the past there used to be a day called Armistice day which was on November 1 1 , as that was the day World War one came to an end in 1917. And that was a great occasion to celebrate. When the Yanks returned from the war in Europe when the Yanks said they wont be back until it's over, "over there," When the first World War was over there was a lot to celebrate at that time. And now after W.W.II, the Korean War, as the Korean war was referred to, "The Forgotten War, a war that wouldn't last but a few days at the most when it first started in June 1950, a little police action to get it straightened out, and Vietnam war, another country where US servicemen were to act as aids in training the South Vietnamese in warfare and that was all it was to amount to until the Vietcong started shooting at the US servicemen, which turned out to be the 1 0,000 day war, where many U S boys lost their lives.. Now Armistice day is referred to as Veterans day. Yep! Times come and times change like a current in a stream that passes by and no one gives it much thought but even the stream bed changes right along with everything else. There are times we should never lose the reason why we have set a special day aside for. Just like the "Wide Spot," is now in the memories of the past, but there are a few people who still remember the "WideSpot." ! ! ! Ahh-Nah-Chi-Toon ! ! ! Toe Ness Ole Tom said: Could you lend me $1,00? The Old Man: I'm a little hard hearing in that ear could you come to the other side? Tom: Could you lend me $5.00? Old Man: Lend you what?: Tom: Five dollars. Old Man: Oh, you had better go back to the one-dollar ear. YIKES SS SS There was the Indian who was visiting Washington D.C. While wandering around the town, a towns person asked, "How do you like our town?" Indian: "All right, and how do you like our country?" YIKES ! ! SS SS Here's a tip- for birthday parties. to blow up the balloons." YIKES!! SS SS One Housewife: How would you describe Father's Day? Other Housewife: Just like Mother's Day...only you don't spend as much money. YIKES EDITOR'S NOTE Spilyay Tymoo welcomes articles and letters from its readers. S"P-BkS SS SS "Never get anyone from Asia SS Jackson praises church youth group To the Editor, I wish to thank the Youth Group of the Presbyterian Church of Warm Springs for the great jobs they did for me last month, namely: mowing the law, pulling weeds from the flower beds. (No to worry that a few new shoots from my poppy species were also cleared out.. ..the wind planted them and some do resemble weeds). Already spent blossoms from two of six lilac shrubs were removed.. .a job that is much too tall for my reach. Then it was time to rest. Two of the boys said they wanted to help in the kitchen. I though t myself, "Well, we'll give it a try!" The fruit was sliced to perfection, as was the ar rangement on the tray. All the group pitched in to do their part in setting up the table and chairs on the patio and with most of the yard work done they proceeded in conversations of youthful humor which brightened our usual perspectives of every-day liv ing. Then questions started flying, such as, "Who took that last piece of cantaloupe. ..apple. ..etc.? Where did all those sausages go? It always ended, "No mc.nor me. ..Oh well, I had all I wanted!" It was so encour aged to hear the fun in their voices, and they had just don a day's work and more. This is the new youth group of whom all Warm springs can be proud. During all of this activity, I heard to Dealer's school offered Are you interested in becoming a Blackjack or Poker Dealer? Sign up at the Indian Head Gaming Center located at Kah-Nee-Ta Resort. Mom & bro's Keep Smiling!!! foul language, no signs of selfish ness nor heard any remarks of "mak ing fun of others." No to say that they don't ever do that, but that day was to get the job done and that they did. Today, the poppies are blooming and are a beautiful sight to see. In case you have not noticed this group before, they regularly clean our streets and by-ways of trash that "others" are so inclined to decorate in "their" styleL.i.e. "Throwing it down for someone else to pick up." When was the last time you picked up trash that otherwise made us and our community look messy? Or, have you offered ever to help your par ents, grandparents or friends or a senior to clean, rake and make more beautiful their living quarters with beautiful flowers, shrubs or grass. ..or.. .or just a friendly smile and a hearty "hello"? It's important that you personally recognize these young girls and boys by complimenting them whenever the opportunity presents itself.
