Where do they go after being in a gang Let's take a little look' at the situation of why gangs are formed today around the country! Many reports show where some guys who do not do well in school are usually the ones who start a gang. To take the attention away from his low IQ status he docs things to make him look tough. And usually others follow suit because they think it is cool to be a tough guy and bully others around. Eventually they become dropouts of school and many times land in the slammer for a long period of time. Yep! It all starts because one can't cut the mustard in school. Sometimes he starts pushing his friends around to join him in his cause. Well sooner or later a bunch of no count guys all get together, dress alike and feel they own the streets cause disrupt to the towns where they live. At the same time other guys are doing the same thing in other parts of the town and gang wars start and usually someone gets hurt. Most of the time it's usually the inocent who pay the price of the gangs. In all the troubles started from gang wars Some how the one who is really responsible for the whole thing usually gets out of everything and is as free as a bird. Yep! Like I said, it usually starts from some one who can't cut school work, sort of like a "dumb bell." There must be some kind of solution to all of this, but what it is no one knows. Maybe give all these bullies kindergarten work in school so they will get good grades and wont feel so bad as to cause trouble and get themselves kicked out of school Many people feel that there is a lack of recreational activity for the youth in a community like this. We might be able to make use of a movie theater, a swimming pool, not like the one by the bridge next to the Community center, but a real swimming pool. Well that swimming pool has been pretty well washed away from the flood recently. We could use a youth game room with some pool tables or a bowling alley. What do gangs accomplish? Well they sure can cause a heck of a bunch of trouble to the inocent people in any community. Cause hard feelings between two races or multi racial activity. Like fights, stealing and doing things like a dare you to do things. Well I'm no expert at these gang activities but just what is said about what goes on among those kind of people. Track in School All school have a track team, the spring sport which is one of the oldest competitive sport in the world and goes way, way back to the Roman and Greek days. A sport where an individual does things on his own like run jump toss, yet he belongs to a team, but everything is done on an individual basis. Some people think it is a boring sport to watch but if you get into in its a very challenging sport. One that takes stamina rhythm. A lot of conditioning to be able to compete in the long distance races, or any event one wishes to compete in. There are the weights, the springs, long distance races. Jumping like the long jump, triple jump, high jump, the shot put and discus all have their impact in the sport. ' Today you hardly see any local kids on the track team in school like we have had in the past. Some set records that still stand today. Well for one thing a person has to sacrifice a lot of things to be a good athlete especially for track. Self discipline and getting into shape takes a lot of concentration and hard work which is probably the reason the kids don't want to get into the track team. There is too much training to do where all the kids today are just lazy to do anything. Some of the greatest track athletes have been Native Americans or of that decent like Jim Thorp, and his group. Billie Mills, who was the first American to ever win the 10,000 meter race in any Olympic competition. Those guys had a goal and saw to it that it was achieved. There are a lot of protential athletes around here but to get them interested is something else....AHH-NAHH-CHI-TOON!! To the editor, Dear Community Artists: Warm Springs Elementary is cur rently looking for community artists to participate in the annual "Arts In Education" week which is scheduled May 6-10, 1996. Arts In Education is a week for 3rd & 4th grade students to lean a craft from a community artist. In the past, we have had artist come in to share their knowledge in tulc mats, dream catchers, loom work, yarn bags, drumming, shawl fring ing, artistry, beading and chain bead ing. I would be interested in hearing from community members who would be willing to share their knowl edge in the following: Dip Nets: Instruct students in making a mini dipnet and also in clude the importance of water safety and the importance of salmon to our tribe. Fcutherwork: Instruct students to make cither a bustle or fan with artificial feathers. To include the importance of the eagle feather and explain the special ceremony at the Longhousc when an eagle feather is dropped. Chokers: Instruct students how to make chokers. Cedar Dasketry: Instruct stu dents how to make baskets out of cedar bark. Yarn Belts: Instruct students how to make a yarn belt. These are just a few ideas of new classes we would like to try this year. I would be very happy to hear from members of the community who would be willing to come and spend time with the kids and share their expertise. Please call me at 553-1 128 with your questions and concerns. Thank you. Helena Jackson School Liaison Thanks for all the help T . I. I'. . To the editor, April 5, 6,&7, 1996, Blackwolf Suicide Prevention Basketball tour ney drew fifteen teams from Oregon, Washington, Idaho and California. There were three different pre sentations given, Easton Aguilar who spoke about suicide, and how the effects had brought on the hurts in their lives, Tina Aguilar who had read a poem a tribal member wrote and who had been our main director this year. She had been working hard on everything that takes to put on a tournament. And also had presented the awards this year. Mr. & Mrs. Aguilar are into the ministry and both love to share their love of their spirituality to Chris and are always there when anyone individual or fam ily is in need of a time sharing. The other presentation was that of Mr. Delson Suppah, whom I respect as a y iya. He had gi ven the recognition of a Native American celebrity, Jonathan Takes Enemy. Thank you Many more thanks to all Guit s reality To the editor. Thanks to eveyone that made our 8th Annual Suicide Prevent Blackwolf Tournament a huge suc cess. Fifteen teams out of sixteen isn't too bad considering that every thing went wrong from the date on. Next year, we plan to have it sched uled at the regular time slot (second weekend of April). Special thanks to the Robert Wood Johnson Healthy Nations that paid our temporary help (referees, time & bookkeepers) and the gym fee. To Jennifer, Nonie and Tom for our awards, all our helpers Following is the results of the raffle: in the kitchen, gym and babysitters. Also to the sponsors & persons do nating to our raffle. But most of all, to our Lord Jesus Christ. He gives us the wisdom to live by His word and to listen to what He wants us to do. There are still many people being blinded by the darkness of this world but we pray one day soon that God's light will break through. For allow ing us to go on another year, we praise you Lord. Hey, to morrow night at the Warm Springs Presbyterian Church we will have the Spring Water Presbyterian Church Choir to share music with Warm Springs. That is Saturday night, everyone welcome. Also on Saturday will be our Adopt-a-road day to clean-up the campus area. We will meet at the church at 10 a.m. I want to talk a little about the issue called guilt. The dictionary gives the meaning GUILT-the fact of having committed an offense, a feeling of responsibility for wrong doing, blame worthiness. For me as a Pastor, the "bottom line" of guilt is One. Guilt is a reality. We feel guilty, we become separated from God. (James 2:10) Two. Humans tend toward evil and prefer to ponder evil rather than good. We play with guilt under the guise that it is keeping us from sin. Yet it makes us more vulnerable to sin. (Jer. 17:9, 10). Three. God does not intend that we remain under the curse of guilt. He desires to release us from guilt. (John chap. 8) Four. Guilt feelings and personal behavior must be evaluated in terms of the teachings of scripture. We must check ourselves to stay free and to be in truth. (1 Cor. 11:28) Also, this is the fourth step of A.A. Guilt is one of the chains of life that comes to tie you up in mind and spirit. Spirituality; Jesus Christ is the breaker of chains. See you in church. Pastor Rick Ribeiro WS Presbyterian Church (on campus) For our daughter Jo Anna Francisca Arce Happy 12th birthday from Mom and Dad There's no time to wonder why, and no time for regret. Life's too short to worry about, what hasn't happened yet. The past is best behind and who knows what life will give. Today is all that matters, Enjoy yourself and live. Delson. Speaking with Mr. Jonathan Takes bnemy, he spoke very highly of the tourney and would like to come back next year and would like to the let the people know of our tourney from his home back in Crow Agency, Mon tana, because they love the game & to travel, they would most likely come. Mr. Takes Enemy had brought his wife and two children with him and seemed to be very happy when intro ducing his family. The change dif ferent that of being a known celeb rity in what he shied away from when being introduced, he was more happy to be photographed with his family. You never need to doubt my love, This heart is ever true. And in the hours we're apart I think of only you. Yours is the only smile I need To start my day off right. Yours are the only arms I want Around me through the night. I want to hold your hand and walk Through leaves of red and gold To sit beside you near the fire When winter winds blow cold. To splash through puddles in the rain, The world alive with spring. To picnic in a field of flowers And hear the bluebirds sing. I want to spend my life with you To know your love alone.
