This course will focus on the portrayals of Indians in American Cinema and popular cul ture, with emphasis on cultural mis conceptions and stereotypes. Stu dents will examine how cinema re flects and creates both political reali ties and false assumptions. Feature topics include: the class of world views, the belief in "manifest des tiny", myths of the "vanishing In dian", and the romanticizing of In dian ecology and spirituality. Atten tion will also be given to studying emerging patterns in portrayal of In dians, as well as contemporary col laborative, and Indian made films. Instructor is Kevin Dye. Class starts on April 2, 1996 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Education Center top floor. Cost: Tuition $120 Books $40. Special Topics in Business Com munication (WR 199) This class is open to all Tribal employee's, the course combines work in basic writing with an intro duction to prevailing practices in written and oral business communi cation. Help with writing mechan ics, spelling, and grammar will in corporated into the course. Students will learn about basic communica tion processes and compose finished drafts of memos, letters and reports. Students will be encouraged to use this course to prepare business mate rials they can use on their jobs. This is not a duplication of WR 121 and will be transferable as an elective course in most schools. This is the final component of the Employee Development Program that began the Fall of 94. These classes are to help individuals im prove their professional skills or to gain new ones. The Instructors are Lowell Lamberton and Maggie Trip let. Of the 1 96 tests, 1 26 were pre-employment, 51 were random, 16 were for cause and three were monitor tests for those on last chance agreements. Overall random testing for reservation worksites in 1995 was 6.2 percent while the tribal government had a 3. 1 percent positive rate. Rodgers comments that the "program has been successful. It isn t one of those programs that has an end, it is ongoing monitoring. This is a proactive approach to the situation." Random testing will return once it has been determined the actual direction of the program. A last second shot missed its mark fro the Buffs who tried to tie the score. That brought the curtain down for the Buffs at the state tourney. I'm sorry. J Melvin Scott David Q. Ruiz, Jr., age 25 years passed away March 21, 1996 at his residence in Madras, Oregon. Ruiz was born November 6, 1970 at Gila Bend, Arizona to parents David Q. Ruiz, Sr. and Bernie Lawson. He was a resident of Central Or egon for 14 years, moving from Ari zona, attending schools in Madras, Oregon. He was employed as a millworker at Brightwood. Mr. Ruiz married Carla Jumping Bull on December 10, 1994 at The Kahneeta Resort.
