4 February 15,1996 Warm Springs, Oregon SpilyayTymoo E Coosh EEWA: 77k? way it is . '"ii y 'I , JcotlJ iv I wonder if anyone needs any water? Or did you say you wanted to get your feet wet? Well at any rate last week there sure was enough water around here to wet anyone's whistle. Especially on Feb. 6 through the 1 Oth, when banks of all streams were overrun by more wa ter than you could shake a stick at. With all the flooding that took place here last week don't quite compare with the 64 flow....or flood. Yep! that year the whole state was in a state of emergency, as roads, bridges highways were all washed away. There was power outage all across the country. Here in Warm Springs, that year people were in pretty bad shape as the south side of the Shitike Creek were completely isolated from the rest of the world. Yep! If you lived on the north side and were cought on the south side there was nothing you could do but to stay at the long house where food and lodging was set up for the flood victims. Those who were on the north side of the creek had a little better chance as they could get out into the world. The only thing is if you wanted to go to Madras the only route was through Simnasho, Maupin and on down to Madras. That was after the road was passable at Willowdale, about 25 miles north of Madras, where the bridge and highway was washed away, but crews were there to make things passable. Yep! Here in Warm Springs, the Shitike Bridge was gone, highway 26 was washed out from the Agency to the Deschutes River. Highway 3 was closed because of the wash out on the south side of the bridge at Warm Springs River just up stream from the Kahneeta Village. There were some people that lost their lives during that flood. People were transported from the south side if the creek to the clinic by Helicopter for medical attention. All supplies had to be flown to the long house for flood victems. Many people think we don't have problems with floods because we live up here on the platues and high in the mountains. Well Charley, things happen just as bad here as in any other place. In the meantime we do have our problems here and one of the biggest gripes is the Communications around here. Especially the media when we feel its very important to get news out to the membership we can't because no one wants to release any information, in other words, "Be the Goat!" and the one letting the news out. At times like this peopTe haVe the right to know whats happening, or be able to tune in KWSO and get the latest on whats happening. Locally we can't get any kind of information to give to our tribal members because no one will release any information. Than we read the same thing in the Bend Bulletin and Oregonian, just what we were trying to get, and people around here say, "Where were you the Spilyay and KWSO, not reporting the news. No one believes us when we try to say we were trying to get the news. The first thing is, "How did the Bulletin and Oregonian get the news? Our phone calls are never returned, so what can we do. They say because of the next of kin has not been notified they will not release any news. Yet on the outside you read in the paper. "There was a car accident on road 8, with acouple injuries but the names were withheld until the relatives have been notified. This gives the news but yet protects those whose names were not mentioned. We never alter any news what is turned in and never use anything with out the permission of the author. Our rule is, all letters to the paper must be signed and with a return address for confirmation if possible. Any letters are never printed if they are not signed. We do get some letters with some good points but they are not signed, so they are just filed away and not used. I have been accused of altering letters and using names of people with out their concent. Thats not true. I hate to receive letters that redicule others and expect it to be printed in the news paper. If you have a gripe about someone deal with them and not get the public envolved. AHH-N AH-CHI-TOON ! ! ! Toe Ness "Tell me," the city slicker asked the hillbilly, "is Boon's Hollow a healhy place to live?" "You Betcha!" crowed the lanky man. "why, when I firs got here I couldn't walk or take solid food." "No kidding!" replied the visitor, "What was wrong?" Nuthin," shrugged the hillbilly. "I was born here," YIKED SS ss There was this patient whose doctor told him he had three months to live. When the patient informed him that he couldn't afford to pay the bill, the physician gave him another three months." YIKES SS SS The women had just stepped into the bathtub when the doorbell rang. "Who Is It?" "Blind man," come the response. Feeling charitable, the woman dashed from the tub without bothering to put on any clothes, grabbed her purse, and opened the door. The man's jaw dropped and he stammered, "wh-where do you want me to put these blinds, lady?" YIKES SS SS EDITOR'S NOTE Spilyay Tymoo welcomes articles and letters from its readers. Winishut Jr. 11 years old 12296 From Bernard & Nadine and family i ! i n ' V ! 1 firefighter for the last 1 1 years. The job description will be similar to the one I did at Fire & Safety, but the rsople and culture will be different, will still be able to make contact with the children in the Madras schools as I did in Warm Springs, and some of them will be yours. I feel very fortunate to have worked here with the people of the Warm Springs Reservation, espe cially the children. Their lives were so important to me because of the impact on them today and how it will affect them the rest of their lives. I want to thank everyone who gave me the resources and support to help me succeed in my job tasks. The person nel at Fire & Safety are a great, caring, and dedicated group who work very hard to serve the commu nity. Without them I could not have completed my job tasks in a positive and successful manner. There are many good things that I've seen happen in Warm Springs and many good people I was fortu nate enough to work with. I will miss the Indian culture atmosphere as much as the people who provided it. My career in the Fire service is moved on into a different department, but part of my heart and soul will always remember the time spent on the Warm Springs Reservation. Please give full support to the next Fireman Bob or whoever takes my place. I know if that person who steps in that role will get the same love and support as I did than the success of that position will continue. Thanks again for everything and hope to see many of you soon. Stay fire safe and God Bless. Fireman Bob To sister: sfor another great year, for being so near, tanks for loaning out your man, to go gambling with one of your fans!
