Since the last reunion, June 1993 proved to be educational, suc cessful and memorable, we are plan ning to host another gathering where there will be more in attendance than the last function. Many of the Hawaiian families have expressed to have this one at this location, for this township was named after the man called John Kalama, a prominent full-blooded Hawaiian native. This story begin ning at or around the early 1800's when Kalama had ended up in the area of the Pacific Northwest, Puget Sound area. Although there are sev eral different stories leading to the vast many reasons why or how this Hawaiian native first came to this region and settled down and never returned to his homeland. , Kalama was only one of many native Hawaiians who ended up stay ing and settling down in the Pacific Northwest. Most of all these native people were prominent and well-respected throughout these areas, for there have been townships, rivers, streets, valleys and variety of re gions named in the memories of these people. Kalama, WA is located along the Interstate 5, North and South free ways that extend from northern Washington on to southern Califor nia. The community of Kalama is located in the Cowlitz County of Washington state an located approxi mately 38 miles north of the Port landVancouver metropolitan area. The city of Kalama holds an An nual Kalama Community Fair which is held at or around the second week end of July. This year the community fair board, city council and the cham- ; bers of commerce have agreed with the planning of the 1995 Kalama Family Reunion to be held during their weekend event. The theme for this year is titled, "Kalama-Sharing of Family Tradition" and will also include a variety of community ac- tivity, parade day, traditional county fair, exhibit booths, food booths, but no carnival rides. A raffle drawing is currently underway as to raise mon ies to help off-set the costs for camp ing fees and a Hawaiian Luau. The raffle drawing features a 1964 Ford Pick-up, 12 ton, good running In dian truck and a 3-day, 2-night trip for two to Reno, plus various other prizes. These tickets are currently on sale now and costs only $1 each. Need not be present to win and will be held on Sunday July 16 at the Kalama Family Reunion Luau. These are the following people who have tickets for sale: Danny Martinez, Dorothy Shadley, Jackie Kalama, Merle Kalama, Bridget Culpus, William C. Moses, Edna Gonzales of Warm Springs. On the Yakama Reservation: Jessie Hill, Quinault Reservation: Sue Kalama, Nisqually Reservation: Carmen "Bootsi" Kalama, Southern Califor nia Carolmomi Evangelista and the Hawaiian Awareness Education Cen ter of the Portland area. If there are other people out in the community who wish to help with sales or wish to donate prizes for raffle, please contact William C. Moses, PO Box 550, Warm Springs, OR 97761. There will be many people stop ping along this busy interstate high way and there will be many different families hosting gatherings in this area. Some of the activity which is to be scheduled with the Kalama Family Reunion will include traditional danc ing of both Indian and Hawaiian cul tures. Many of the families who have expressed they are wishing to attend this function will travel from the sev eral Islands of Hawaii, California, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Colo rado, Georgia, Nevada and possibly the Canadian areas. The Hawaiian families will also be traveling to sur rounding Indian communities to see or visit the Indian families, so don't be surprised if you see visitors stroll ing around our communities. This will focus on the historical events of the early years and will be very inter esting to seek the genealogical re search studies each families, will be bringing to this gathering. There are over 4,000 Kalama's in the world. I was told there are possi bly over 7,000 Kalama's most are still seeking the lineage of blood lines and relationships. I am hoping to get this function video documented for the purpose of educational usage for our future people to be known that no matter where people come from that people are generally related somehow or another. This isn't here to focus on alienating people against people, but to show that natives of foreign or distant lands are usually related with other native people somehow or somewhere. But also that both cul tures of Indian and Hawaiian people are also similar in beliefs, traditions, cultures. I was contacted in the month of March to do an interview for the Northwest Native Show, which will televise on cable television in the Oregon, Washington, Hawaiian and Montana area. The number of participants cur rently are unknown at this time but I would only guess that it will not exceed the amount of our limited resources or sources. I do know this does take a joint effort and I have had the number appreciate their time and patience that this will prove to be another successful gathering. - The next tentative family gather ing was suggested to be held some where on the Hawaiian Island and will be focus on being a LuauPow wow. They will be looking at wild flowers in bloom, a fire truck and all its equipment, lots of trees and all the animals they can find. The scheduled departure is 9 a.m. and return is set for approximately 1:30 p.m. As always chaperones are needed. We would love for you to join the group. In order for this trip to go as well as possible for your child shehe needs the following things on or before the trip: 1) Signed permission slip, no slip, no trip. 2) Warm clothing, in cluding a jacket. No shorts, dresses or sandals please. Kids will be hik ing. 3) A sack lunch with nothing breakable. District 509-J Applies for Impact Aid Funds Jefferson County School District 509-J recently submitted its 1996 (FY96) application for Federal Im pact Aid Funds under Section 8003 in Title VIII of the Elementary and Sec ondary Education Act of 1965 (for merly P.L. 81-874). Funds received under this program are in lieu of local property taxes that would be col lected if the properties were not ex empted by the Federal Government. These funds are included in the District's general fund budget and are used for regular operating pur poses. The law does not designate any specific expenditures from the entitlement, however some restric tions are placed on funds generated by enrolled students with disabili ties. Changes made in the Impact Aid regulations during 1994 have caused the District to no longer qualify un der some, of the formerly funded categories. The Fy96 application was based on education services that are provided for students in only four categories. Total District enrollment on the September 30, 1994 count date was 2929. The current ethnic report indi cates the following percentages of enrollment by group: Caucasian 45; Indian-36; Hispanic-18; Other-1. The District received $2,657,735.17 for the FY94 Impact Aid application and so far this school year, has received 85 of that amount for the FY95 application. Fun, games, races and more fun Howlak Tichum Joshua Miller Sixteen month old, Joshua Tell Miller of Madras passed away May 8, 1995 at Providence Hospital in Portland, Oregon due to natural causes. He was born January 1 1, 1994 in Madras to Avex (Stony) and Sandra (Sheehan) Miller. Visitation was held Tuesday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 10 at the Warm Springs Presbyterian Church. Reverend Rick Ribiero officiated the services. The organist was Louise Jackson. The burial followed at Agency Cemetery in Warm Springs. Survivors include: brothers; John Paul Miller, Elijah Miller, Issiah Miller and Stony Miller, sisters; Sabrina Sleehan Miller, Tia Miller, Arlena Miller, Meda Miller and Annalysia Miller.
