Tribal Council Election Information Agency District- 2 March 17, 1995 Agency voters will vote for three candidates y a x ' V Dasy May Ike My name is Daisy Mae Ike. I have three sons and three daughters with 12 grandchildren. I also have 11 step grandchildren who bless me with 11 great-grandchildren. I am seeking your support and vote for Tribal Council this term. My platform is accountability and equality for all tribal members from top to bottom (Tribal Council to entry-level employ ees). I am prepared to serve and rep resent you and our people for as long as necessary. There are many needs that our people face, i.e., housing, education, per capita, and bonus money issues. In addition, protecting our tribal sover eignty and our ceded areas, which need to be preserved for our children yet un born. I believe that tribal information needs to be shared with all tribal mem bers. Even those who do not reside on the reservation and I am committed to do just that. I want to be able to negotiate in your behalf and I really need your support and vote to represent your ideas and concerns. I want a positive future for all of us. Please help me to represent our district. You are more than welcome to write or phone me with your concerns and ideas. I appreciate you taking the time to read my statement. Daisy M. Ike PO Box 769 Warm Springs, OR 97761 At times, it seems almost impossible for all of us members of our Tribes to work together and be able to communi cate so that we can better understand one another. I realize that times are changing very fast and it is hard for us to keep up with and understand and be able to deal with changing times. As I've stated before, the Tribal Council needs to try harder to work with ;our managers and talk with all of our 'people and find a way to make this a better place for all. ., .. . , . . . t.;.Viu Our tribal members are very lucky to have this place to live and enjoy the things that previous Councils and the people helped preserve for us to use. I .feel that we, as a people, need to leave for future generations the best possible 'land and resources for their enjoyment 'and better lifestyles. All of us working together can keep our reservation the best place to live and keep it the best and most produc tive land anywhere. Once aqain. I encouraae all voters to cast their ballots for those that they feel comfortable with. I know that we "have a lot of very good candidates this year. . Zane Jackson ' X't I I I -'' IN- ( - & - yj - : -" r ft j t.at m..., a. . - For those who may not know me, I am 49 years of age with two children (son-Ron and daughter-Cory) and mar ried (just celebrated our 30th anniver sary) to Maxine (Langley) Clements. We are blessed with four grandchildren and many, many relatives. I am a college graduate in the Edu cation profession and currently serve as the General Manager of Education for the Tribe. I have worked for the Tribe for 1 6 years. I also served on the Tribal Council from 1980 to 1986 before tak ing on more management responsibili ties. I would like to take on the Council responsibility aaain as I believe the time is here for some good old fashioned teamwork. Many of you realize the next 10 to 20 years are going to be extremely chal lenging for our people. We will need leaders who can work together and make some tough decisions. This must happen in a teamwork environment that includes the people. I believe I can help create this situation while having a good time doing so. While there are chal lenges, there are also many opportuni ties that will be created and we need leaders who have the faith and willina-. ness to count on our people. I do, and I will help bring our people along to meet those challenges and opportunities. In the Agency District meeting, I was most honored to be nominated by a long-time Council member, Rita Squiemphen, and I want to thank her for her confidence. At this meeting, I stated four areas of focus I would look at if elected. They were: Education: Our people need to con tinue growing and developing to meet tomorrow's challenges. This will best occur through quality education pro grams and services. I would like to see an overall development program made available to our people that lets them choose challenging programs. Once they accomplish these programs they should be able to utilize their talents to advance through our systems based on their ability and readiness. I hope this can become reality. Economic Development: I have al ways believed that our people can do good business if given the chance. I still believe this and want to help create a way for this to really happen. Financial assistance and technical support are two areas I believe we can do a lot more in to help our people get started. I will work to this end again. Financial Stability: With forest re sources on the decline, our Tribe will have to find other means to continue revenue needs. I think we have another two or three years to depend on the for est and then we need to be into other things to replace the revenue here. Gaming is a possibility now and may i in. i . U , Mike Clements work out for the long haul. I'm not real positive on that idea and think we need to look at other possibilities. In the mean time, I believe we need to stop spend ing like there is no tomorrow in order to have something left for our children and grandchildren. At the meeting I specifi cally mentioned the "bonus" as some thing I think we should learn how to do without. There are other areas, like a leaner organization. And maybe even wiser spending habits in other areas. But all in all, I think there are great ar eas of potential that we should look at expanding into such as the Tourism in dustry. This will provide us with more jobs and challenges for the future. Tribal Languages: Our Native lan guages are on the decline and if not attended to, ready for extinction. Many Native languages cross the country are on the brink of having no speakers and we are no different. It is estimated that one percent to two percent of our people speak and will be gone in 10 to 20 years. It is hard to believe that we might live in a world with no Warm Springs or Wasco speakers. But, that is the truth and we have the capability to make sure that this doesn't happen. I am taking classes in Wasco myself and always encourage others to pick up on one of our languages, ffook forward to staying committed and maybe one day being able to pass on the language myself. I encourage you to do the same so we don't have to say we have no more speakers left. Well folks, that's about it for now. I have many other concerns but these have a special place right now. I encour age you all to vote as there are many good candidates with good ideas and thoughts. Remember: March 28 is vote day and I sincerely hope you can check my name as I would be honored to serve you once again. My main concerns and interests are to protect our Tribal sovereignty and strengthen individual tribal member rights. The world around us is con stantly bringing new threats. New op portunities we seek may also bring risks for our way of life. We must not weaken our authority to decide our own matters or allow outside regulations onto our Reservation. , I believe that our people deserve to be informed of how we are responding to the difficulty facing our community through regular face-to-face meetings with our Council and Committees. I will commit to be more active by informing and consulting our people as issues are being considered. Decisions need to be put back in the hands of the people by if -- it 9 P 4 if 1 1 representatives who don't have conflict ing loyalties with existing personal or outside interests. I also understand that people need to feel more secure in their own homes and personal situations to give more hope about shaping our future. We must start taking better care of some basic needs with individuals and family units. I have dedicated most of my adult life working to assist our individual tribal members and their families in some very trying times. Our community is experiencing some very serious problems that need atten tion and priority over travel assign ments. Tribal differences must not limit our progress. I believe that we should work together like a family, since we are merging. My grandchildren reflect all three Tribes. The beliefs and priorities I want to pursue include: Family Stability The role and skills of families need to be strengthened to be the source of help for immediate and extended fam ily members which reinforced our kin ship ties to one another. Employment . Our people need secure employment to afford homes, a reliable car and other basic needs. People need to feel good about their work and the sense of inde pendence that is created. Community Services Almost half of tribal spending goes into education, health enforcement, em ployment and social services that don't work very well with one another. These programs must be made more account able for their quality of services and the money they are costing us by taking resources from other priorities. Natural Resources Our salmon are disappearing and we may lose that bond they contributed to our cultural ways including our Treaty rights. Our forest lands have to be given a chance to recover to best support the other benefits we want beside timber revenue. Our water and hunting rights have to be protected to meet our present and future needs. Economic Development Our economic success must focus on bringing reliable revenue sources, jobs for our people and support more private business opportunities for Tribal mem- pi.IUlllllBlUil.lll.lll! Beyond the annual reports, the membership, who are the stockholders, must know and support where our ma jor enterprises are headed and why. We should have our own banking services to start investing in our own future. Our Youth Invest in them now Use every means to encourage, support and nurture our young people in all their efforts. Help them to understand their traditions, history to reawaken the spiri tual strength of their ancestors. Let them learn to be more ac tive leaders by using their natural tal ent and ability in a Youth Council. Secure a fair and high-quality education, K-12. We need a Tribal Council that will make sure all members of the Tribes share a common vision and then pre pares them to make this vision a real ity. I understand many of the issues and I am conveniently located in the center of Warm Springs to be able to hear your concerns to do the best job that I am able.
