HIV Testing at the Health and Wellness Center
In these days when HIVAIDS (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)(Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome)
are in the forefront, people are faced with looking at their own personal lifestyles and practices.
FACTS
1) HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. 2) A diagnosis of AIDS may occur 1 to 10 years after infection by the
virus. 3) HIVAIDS is recognized as a sexually transmitted disease. 4) You can protect yourself from this deadly
virus. 5) We emphasize safe sex practices and discuss ways to prevent blood to blood contact. 6) Some clients
are simply curious and would like a test, perhaps due to having multiple sex partners in the past 7) HIV testing
is offered to anyone with a diagnosis of a sexually transmitted disease, to those entering drug or alcohol treatment
programs and to pregnant women. 8) The HIV test is strictly voluntary. 9) Test is CONFIDENTIAL. 10) HIV Test
results are not given over the phone. 1 1) Nurses or Primary Providers (Doctors, Physician Assistants or Nurse
Practitioners) must counsel clients who request testing.
Counseling is an important element to assess the clients knowledge and understanding of the disease and
personal risk factors. An appointment within one week for follow-up post test counseling is also necessary. At
this session, the nurse or provider discusses the results, reviews risk factors and assesses whether further testing
is necessary.

AHave Your Cholesterol
Checked

the "good" range reduces your risk
of heart disease. Whether you need
to bring yours down, or keep it at the
current level, eating healthier makes
sense for everyone.
ARead labels. The new food
labels are easy to understand, and
provide valuable information on the
amount of fat, cholesterol and num
ber of calories in each serving.
AEat foods lower in fat, es
pecially saturated fat.
A Watch the amount of cho
lesterol you eat Foods such as egg
yolks, red meat and whole milk are
very high in cholesterol.
ASubstitute low-fat, low
cholesterol alternatives. Drink skim

APrepare Your Car or Truck for
Winter
Give your car a simple, but com
plete, preventative maintenance
checkup; it may be the difference
between getting home safe and warm,
or being stranded in a frozen parking
lot.
AMake sure all fluids are
filled to the recommended level
oil, antifreeze, windshield washer,
transmission fluid, etc.
ARemove corrosion from
your battery terminals and connec
tions with a wire brush.
AYou'll be using your
windshield wipers a lot, so make
sure the blades are in good shape. If
they're hard, cracked or worn, invest
in a new pair.
AInspect your tires for tread
wear or damage, and check their air
pressure with a tire gauge. Proper
inflation improves gas mileage and
increases traction and stability.
AHave a rough-running
engine looked at by a trained techni
cian. Problems starting or keeping
your engine running will only worsen
as the temperatures drop.
ACheck Your Home for Hazards

can be lurking about your home.

genetic progeny" were separated and
the broodstock (fish used to reproduce
the next generation of fish) gathered
for spawning at Lyons Ferry Hatch
ery. The eggs would stay at Lyons
Ferry and, what they considered the
impure fish, were taken to the
Klickitat Hatchery," he said.
"In actuality, NMFS was killing
the tribes' fish and moving them out
of the basin. They considered them
inferior to spawn with what they
considered the wild fish," said Paul
Lumley, CRITFC research analyst
This new agreement may repre
sent a shift in management philoso
phy: NMFS and the Washington De
partment of Fish and Wildlife are
now willing to use fish from Lyons
Ferry Hatchery for supplementation
and as a recovery tool.
Beginning September 24, all
identifiable Lyons Ferry Hatchery
fish were trapped at the dam and
taken to the hatchery to be spawned
like all other fish. The juvenile off
spring of the three- and four-year-old
fish will be released above Lower
Granite Dam. "This will allow the
fish to imprint in that part of the river
so when they return to spawn, they
will go back there," said Dompier.
"For years, we've been pressing
them to use the Lyons Ferry Hatchery-reared
fish. Maybe now we can
get on with the recovery and re
building. Although not a victory in
terms of fish this year, it represents a
victory for future recovery action,"
said Lumley. Returning the progeny
of the three- and four-year-old fish to
the river will mean an estimated 80 to
100 fall chinook adults returning to
spawn in the next three to five years.
Even though fish agencies and
tribes are in agreement with what to
do with the three- and four-year-old
progeny, there are still differences
about how to use the progeny from
five-year-old chinook begin trapped.
The tribes believe the five-year-olds
would be appropriate for use in
natural production areas.
The tribes propose something
called 'back-crossing. "We would
take the five-year-old females and
cross them with Snake River males.
This would be an attempt to improve
the genetic profile," said Lumley. ,
"Eventually, the fish that were in
fluenced by non-Snake River stocks
would in effect become, in NMFS
terms, more genetically pure and this
would be an opportunity to use these
fish within the Snake River Basin,"
concluded Lumley.

on a camp stove or barbecue only
outdoors 4) if you own a generator,
use it to power specific items, not
the entire house.
When calling Pacific to report an
outage, please let the customer ser
vice representative know if your
lights are out or just dim, whether
your neighbor's lights are on and if
you can see any damaged poles or
downed wires nearby. Also, it's
helpful to leave your porch light
and one indoor light on, so you and
repair crews will know when ser
vice is restored.
